I Recently had some problems with a bad memory module in one of my Windows PCs. One of the symptoms was a program -- I forget which -- reporting "CAUSEWAY ERRORs"
Failed To Create Ram Drive More Than 2gb Ram
during Windows initialization. A bit of Googling revealed that CAUSEWAY ERRORs are reported unable to control synonym from time to time from some MSDOS programs including GHOST, AVG Anti-virus, and others that I have never heard of. What I didn't find easily was any clear explanation of what CAUSEWAY is or why these errors turn up. There is a general tone of exasperation/puzzlement/frustration in the messages posted by those who encounter https://support.symantec.com/en_US/article.TECH107349.html these messages. What is CAUSEWAY? It turns out that Causeway is a memory manager a.k.a. -- A DOS extender. Memory managers make the large amounts of memory available on PCs in the last decade available to MSDOS programs. Causeway is the memory manager that the Watcom C Compiler will link programs to when they are compiled. There is a fairly decent manual for CAUSEWAY at http://www.devoresoftware.com/freesource/mainsrc.htm. Memory managers http://donaldkenney.x10.mx/CAUSEWAY.HTM control the usage of memory beyond the 640K that was available on the 8086 CPU that was used in the original PC. Popular memory managers include Causeway, DGJPP, and DOS4GW. Almost all PCs with a 386 or later CPU will use memory managers to run larger programs. See http://www.thefreecountry.com/programming/dosextenders.shtml for more information on memory managers. See also http://www.devoresoftware.com/cwwman/ There is a list of causeway error codes at https://web.archive.org/web/20150308181744/http://www.openwatcom.org/ftp/manuals/1.5/cw.pdf 01 Unable to resize memory block 01 (MSDOS file access error) 02 Not 386 or later 02 (Not a Causeway file (3P signature missing?)) 03 Non-Standard protected mode program (i.e. neither VCPI nor DPMI supported) already active 03 (Not enough memory or invalid CWC file) 04 MSDOS 3.1 or later required 05 Not enough memory for CauseWay 06 VCPI failed to switch to protected mode 07 Can't control A20 line (Can't access High memory) 08 Selector allocation error (DPMI can't allocate sufficient selectors. Stopping other DPMI programs may fix) 09 Unrecoverable Exception (Often a LAN driver problem?) 10 Can't find Application to Load (Bad .EXE file) 11 DOS Run Time Error or Corrupted application file 12 Not Enough Memory to Load Application 13 DPMI failed to switch to protected mode 14 Invalid interna

Is it "Himem.sys is there."? If you use boot disks and still get it then it must be in bios. Could be a virus. Try opening your computer case and looking for a small quarter-sized lithium battery. Unkook power cables, remove the battery, and wait for a full minute. Put it back in, plug your power cables back in, and reboot. This will clear everything in bios so don't forget to reconfigure the time and any other settings. 0 LVL 5 Overall: Level 5 Windows Networking 3 Message Expert Comment by:johnsavior2000-07-16 Hi pthurman, Generally HIMEM.SYS is on directory C:\WINDOWS\, so add this line on CONFIG.SYS file : device=c:\windows\himem.sys /m:1 Good luck. 0 LVL 4 Overall: Level 4 Message Expert Comment by:sconnell2000-07-17 The message, "unable to control A20 line- XMS driver not installed." is due to an incompatibility or misreading of your BIOS and HIMEM.SYS. HIMEM.SYS must take control of the A20 line to provide management of extended memory. In your case, the A20 line is not recognised for some reason. There are many possible fixes so if one suggestion doesn't work, try another. The fix? * DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS /M:1 (what johnsavior already wrote!) OR DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS /testmem:off /M:1 /cpuclock:on. Even add the an additional switch "/V" for verbose. This will provide additio
