At one site (and only one site - our product is widely deployed to many environments), we randomly get the following error: java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: unable to create new native thread at java.lang.Thread.start0(Native Method) at java.lang.Thread.start(Unknown Source) Operating system is Windows 7 64 bit We are running in a 32 bit JVM ( 1.7.0_45) Using Windows Task Manager, I can see that the process has 39 native threads (not very many), so we don't have a thread leak in our app... There are no other processes consuming lots of threads (Explorer has 35, jvisualvm has 24, iexplore has 20, ... I don't have an exact count, but we are probably looking at maybe 300 threads for the user total). I have attempted to attach JVisualVM, but it fails to connect to the process (probably b/c of thread exhaustion). But from the metrics I can obtain from JVisualVM, the number of Java threads is about 22 live and 11 daemon. The heap is well behaved - heap is 500MB with 250MB

Although there might be plenty of memory available on your machine, you have hit the maximum amount of memory allowed by your JVM, which can be set through the -Xmx parameter The java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: Unable to create new native thread happens whenever the JVM asks for a new thread from the OS. If the underlying OS cannot allocate a new native thread, this OutOfMemoryError will be thrown. 1) Check Threads system wide settings The /proc/sys/kernel/threads-max file provides a system-wide limit for the number of threads. The root user can change that value if they wish to: $ echo 100000 > /proc/sys/kernel/threads-max You can check the cur

Description Henrik Dohlmann 2009-07-30 05:38:05 EDT OS: Vista 64bit. JVM: 1.6.0u14 32bit. I try to debug an application with lots of recursion that pumps out alot of information to the console. Sometimes the console stops showing data, and Eclipse is sort of dead. Switching to the debug perspective shows an empty debug view. Switching to another perspective is possible, but some views are black (not repainted?). Starting debugger from the debug perspective somtimes freezes with alot of empty entries in the thread list

Description David Williams 2015-10-18 20:38:10 EDT Might have started with the previous I-build, not sure. And, so far, not sure how to reproduce. But, the problem is I will have an IDE open, but be doing other things, and then get an "out of memory" exception in the iDE (after, say 30 minutes or an hour). The first message (before "out of memory") is "can not create a native thread" ... I think perhaps says "can not create native thread for GC". It does seem to depend on "having
