The How-To Geek Forums Have Migrated to Discourse How-To Geek Forums / Windows Vista Print from cmd mode. (8 posts) Started 8 years ago by Tom Latest reply from Lighthouse Topic Viewed 16417 times Tom Posts: 138 This post has been reported. I was in the cmd mode in Dos and I tried to print out a file, and yes I know you can do this very easy from a folder but I still would like to know what I am doing wrong if anything. With the "help print" it shows print [/d:device] [[drive:][Path]filename[----] /d:device specifies a print device. No matter what I put in the device name I get a message back "unable to initialize device" My printer is on USB001. It doesn't take that or prn which is the default or the printer name or anythng else I've tried. Can anyone help? Reports: · Posted 8 years ago Top Lighthouse Posts: 13598 This post has been reported. I think, from the command line you can only print to LPT1 or 2 for a printer. It doesn't know what a usb is Reports: · Posted 8 years ago Top Tom Posts: 138 This post has been reported. Thanks, I thought that was the case too, but I just like to know what I can and cannot do. I'm thinking there is something I don't know. (which is a lot). Reports: · Posted 8 years ago Top Lighthouse Posts: 13598 This post has been reported. Thanks, I tried this and it just printed out a lot of garbage. Maybe it is not ASCII? It was from wordpad. Isn't that ASCII? Reports: · Posted 8 years ago Top Lighthouse Posts: 13598 This post has been reported. The default in wordpad is RTF, so, not pure ASCII Try notepad Reports: · Posted 8 years ago Top Tom Posts: 138 This post has been reported. OK, yeah it works fine with pure ASCII. THANKS FOR THE HELP. Reports: · Posted 8 years ago Top Lighthouse Posts: 13598 This post has been reported.
