[closed] up vote 6 down vote favorite I'm having some trouble getting pgadmin3 to run on a remote server. I'm logging in to the server using SSH with the -X option. When I first installed pgadmin3, I was able to launch http://askubuntu.com/questions/4444/pgadmin3-unable-to-initialize-gtk-is-display-set-properly it using the command "pgadmin3 &", and PG Admin would launch correctly using my local X server. Something has happened though, and now PG Admin will no longer launch. It bounces back with the message "Error: Unable to initialize gtk, is DISPLAY set properly?" I'm using the same SSH command to log in to the server, and the same command to launch PG Admin, yet it is no longer working. I haven't made any changes to my SSH configuration, nor have I installed any new software, so I'm at a loss as to how this broke and how to go about fixing it. What could have happened to break this, and where do I start with fixing it? server ssh postgresql share|improve this question edited Nov 17 '10 at 0:07 Jorge Castro 24.4k91386589 asked Sep 20 '10 at 17:06 Warren Pena 1,05051112 closed as too localized by Luis Alvarado♦ Mar 14 '13 at 17:17 This question is unlikely to help any future visitors; it is only relevant to a small geographic area, a specific moment in time, or an extraordinarily narrow situation that is not generally applicable to the worldwide aud

Hey Gurus, I am using Putty on a windows 7 machine trying to access my server, that part works fine. As soon as I try to access a program installed that has a GUI I receive the above error (Error: Unable to initialize gtk, is DISPLAY set properly?). After lots of google power I learned that the DISPLAY variable needs to be set to my windows machine (I believe, so my IP?), if I print display: Code: echo $DISPLAY It returns an empty line, so blank. I learned from this forum when using Putty you need to check of the X11 security enabled, which I have. Even with that checked if I go to the server and echo out DISPLAY it is still blank. Any advice on how to possibly debug this more? (and I'm new to OpenSuse / Linux as well...).When I try to start Code::Blocks for the first time after a reboot, it works fine. But when I close it and then try to open it again, I just can see a new tab inthe window-bar on the bottom of the screen but nothing happens. I also noticed that if I close Code::Blocks after I started it, it just closes the Window of Code::Blocksbut it doesn't terminate it's process (the process still runs as I can see when I type "top" in the terminal or press CTRL+ESC). I found out that the standard settings ("Enviroment") allowsonly one instance of Code::Blocks at the same time so I think thats the reason why I can not start Code::Blocks a second time because the process of the first instance is still running.I tried do uncheck this option so that more instances are allowed, but Code::Blocks doesn't save my changes and this option is checked again when I startd Code::Blocks again after a reboot.I tried the steps mentioned in this link: http://forums.codeblocks.org/index.php?topic=8520.0;prev_next=next. When I delete the file "/tmp/Code::Blocks-
