What software do you want to use? Is it REALLY necessary to give it root access=If you want to run it as root, you should do the following in a terminal:$ unable to initialize gtk is display set properly mac xhost + enable X access from terminals$ su login as root# /path/to/programnameOr better yet if you use sudo.Better yet if you start the program withgksu

I configured a X server, which I start with the command startx -- -ac. The server is running fine on port :0. Then, I set the environment variable DISPLAY to :0. Now, when I run a GTK application on the node, it fails with the following error: Error: Unable to initialize gtk, is DISPLAY set properly? Now, my question is, is there any runtime library that I need for http://askubuntu.com/questions/28563/gtk-applications-do-not-start running GTK applications on top of a X server?
