My terminal looks like this: ubuntu@(none):~$ sudo true sudo: unable to resolve host (none) What can I do to solve it? sudo error-handling share|improve this question edited Apr 13 '14 at 5:18 unable to resolve hostname raspberry pi Radu Rădeanu 78.1k24173257 asked Aug 31 '11 at 19:09 Kit Sunde 2,25151423 1 Please post the contents of /etc/hostname and /etc/hosts. –arrange Aug 31 '11 at 20:24 24 I recommend against closing this question as too localized. There are many users who may mistakenly think they've put one name in their hosts file but put in a different name instead, especially since on many networks, computers are similarly named. This question (and answer) would show up when someone searches with that problem, and the answer would prompt them to check for such discrepancies, even though the exact misspelling would be different. –Eliah Kagan Aug 18 '12 at 11:09 5 make sure your hostname same with hosts. e.g. the hostname is ubuntu-pc and hosts is ubuntu-pc must be same. –Muhammad Sholihin Apr 1 '13 at 8:17 add a comment| 19 Answers 19 active oldest votes up vote 451 down vote accepted Two things to check (assuming your machine is called my-machine, you can change this as appropriate): That the /etc/hostname file contains just the name of the machine. That /etc/hosts has an entry for localhost. It should have something like: 127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost 127.0.1.1 my-machine If either of these files aren't correct (since you can't sudo), you may have to reboot the machine into recovery mo

Unable to resolve hostname? I keep getting the Unable to resolve hostname error unable to resolve hostname minecraft with every server I use, all the info I enter is correct. Before I even press connect I get unable to resolve hostname vent this error and once I do it gives me the same error. Any ideas would could be causing this? I highly doubt it is my router, have a D-Link gaming router, windows http://askubuntu.com/questions/59458/error-message-when-i-run-sudo-unable-to-resolve-host-none firewall disabled and norton is out of subscription. DNS is a TCP/IP function that http://forum.ventrilo.com/showthread.php?t=41793 converts a Hostname to an Ipaddress. The cache can either be local or on an upstream DNS server (depending on how your TCP/IP settings are configured). To clear the local cache power off the modem-router-pc (in that order) for at least 60 seconds. If you still get the error message then the problem is further upstream. The following instructions are a temporary work-around: This site will allow you to lookup the ipaddress based on a hostname. Type in the following into a web browser: http://network-tools.com/ Enter the full server hostname (from the server setup in ventrilo client) in the box, select "Network Lookup" then click the "Submit" button. The ipaddress you need will be listed on the left-hand side of the screen. In Ventrilo --> Server, enter the ipaddress in place of the hostname. Note: before changing the server info in Ventrilo, write down the hostname so that it can re-entered after the DNS issues have been resolved.
