They did not start receiving the error at the same time, and are in different departments that do not work on the same information. The error occurs whether opening Excel from scratch, opening a new workbook from an open instance of Excel, or opening an existing workbook. The error is an annoyance, but does not prevent saving or any other functionality that we know of. Others in their respective departments do not have this issue. I have tried Excel in safe mode, manually disabling all add-ins, clearing the XLSTART folder (nothing was there), and as of this afternoon, a complete uninstall/reinstall of Office 2010. Even after the uninstall/reinstall, the problem remains. Any help short of reimaging the laptops would be extremely helpful! Thanks! Strange files can show up in e-mail. Then ask the friend what kind of files are in the zip and then ask that they be resent if you really want them. Solved "Unable to read file" error updating links in spreadsheet Posted on 2012-05-02 MS Excel 1 Verified Solution 9 Comments 521 Views Last Modified: 2012-05-29 I have a client that just upgraded to Excel 2010. She has a spreadsheet that contains links to many other spreadsheets. Since the upgrade, some of the cells weren't updating. She goes to edit links and tries to relink to the spreadsheet. It says "unable to read file". I did a search and found two possible causes. One is the file it's linking to is read only. This wasn't the case. The other was the spreadsheet it was linking to had imported data from an Access report. This wasn't the issue either. Anyone else run into this? 0 Question by:SDTSS Facebook Twitter LinkedIn Google LVL 65 Active 1 day ago Best Solution byRobSampson Have you tried loading Excel by running excel /s and then trying to link to it? The /s bypasses all XLStart files, but you may want to disable all add-ons as well for testing. Rob. 0 Message Author Comment by:SDTSS2012-05-03 I appreciate the help Rob. That's the Access issue I'd found. They already knew about that and was using the work around. 0
