I do not have a discrete video card installed. I'm booting off a SSD, if that makes any difference.I'm assuming you guys will need the output of some scripts and/or the contents of some setup files but I wouldn't know what to give you so I'll wait until you ask! Thanks for any help guys!Update : So, I followed the steps posted here : https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 5#p1030435Everything seems to work, the KMS test responds with "1"There are no more errors in my /var/log/Xorg.0.log file :http://codepad.org/USjbDkg5However, glxinfo and xbmc still respond with the same errors, whether I run them as user or as root...Could this be because I'm running off the VGA port on my motherboard and not the DVI or HDMI ports ? It's one of those wonderful hybrid graphics cards. I've spent a great amount of time trying to install the drivers for this graphics card properly. My primary reason to do this is to run gnome 3, which will not work properly when I install the fglrx driver from the additional http://askubuntu.com/questions/94272/ati-driver-issue-fglrxinfo-returning-null-display-error-xorg-conf-file-looks-f drivers section of system settings. I know the desire to run gnome 3 might sound trivial, but I've made it my mission to get this to work. Is there a way to simply ignore the ati graphics and go with the intel graphics when using gnome? So, after reinstalling ubuntu using wubi, I immediately followed this guide. However, I ran into some blocks. When I ran the aticonfig command, I got a response PowerXpress error: Cannot stat '/usr/lib64/fglrx': No such file or directory I setup a symbolic link between /usr/lib and /usr/lib64. I do not know if that is correct, but it got my forward. When I rebooted the computer after calling aticonfig, I ended up hanging while booting on a black screen. It was like Checking Blah [ok] ..... Checking Battery State [ok] There were some fails, but the ones I could see were not important. So i go into tty1 and trying running the command fglrxinfo, but i receive the response: Error: unable to open display (null) So, I look at my Xorg.conf file, and the contents, which seem strange, are as follows: Section "ServerLayout" Identifier "aticonfig Layout" Screen 0 "aticonfig-Screen[0]-0" 0 0 EndSection Section "Module" EndSection Section "Monitor" Identifier "aticonfig-Monitor[0]-0" Option "VendorName" "Ati Proprietary Driver" Option "ModelName" "Generic Autodetecting Monitor" Option "DPMS" "true" EndSection Section "device" Identifier "aticon

When I run gedit .bashrc (for example), I get: (gedit:9510): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display: set | grep DISPLAY returns nothing. But if I ssh -Y into my Ubuntu 11.04 machine, gedit .bashrc works. echo $DISPLAY returns "localhost:10.0". I tried export DISPLAY=localhost:10.0 while sshed into my VM and then running gedit .bashrc, but I get: (gedit:9625): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display: localhost:10.0 What could be different in the configuration of the two difference Ubuntu machines that would explain why one works and the other doesn't? Update: As suggested by Zoredache in the comment below, I ran sudo apt-get install xbase-clients, but I continue to have the same problem. ssh display xorg gtk share|improve this question edited Feb 9 '14 at 12:20 Pablo Saratxaga 1133 asked Jul 13 '11 at 18:13 Daryl Spitzer 2,92393236 migrated from serverfault.com Jul 13 '11 at 18:31 This question came from our site for system and network administrators. 2 Does the Ubuntu 10.04 box have the proper tools for X11 installed? Install xbase-clients, if it isn't installed already. –Zoredache Jul 13 '11 at 18:22 I installed it but still have the same problem. (See above.) –Daryl Spitzer Jul 13 '11 at 18:29 Yes. Just to be sure, I restarted the VM (and reconnected through SSH afterward). &n
