On Linux, for example, perror 35 returns OS error code 35: Resource deadlock avoided. I do not have an OSX system handy to test, but from this: http://www.opensource.apple.com/source/xnu/xnu-1456.1.26/bsd/sys/errno.h I gather that error 35 is "Resource temporarily unavailable", meaning that some other process (possibly another instance of mysqld?) has already locked the file. To debug, first I would check if there is another MySQL process running by chance (looks like you already have), and if not, reboot for good measure to make sure there are no strange stale file locks, and then try again. Somebody has run into this error before, and found a solution: mysql_install_db, error: 35, on a Mac OS X 10.9.1 share|improve this answer edited Nov 16 '15 at 23:49 answered Nov 16 '15 at 23:43 Sasha Pachev 2,9231813 add a comment| Your Answer draft saved draft discarded Sign up or log in Sign up using Google Sign up using Facebook Sign up using Email and Password Post as a guest Name Email Post as a guest Name Email discard By posting your answer, you agree to the privacy policy and terms of service. lock ./ibdata1, error: 11 This is an error I see in the logs from time to time. I am running a MySQL server with an openvz container http://notesonit.blogspot.com/2013/05/innodb-unable-to-lock-ibdata1-error-11.html on a Proxmox server. From time to time the Proxmox server will crash which causes all the VMs it is running to stop unexpectedly (in defense of Proxmox this has only happened on a development box that is installed on a workstation). When I attempt to access the MySQL server through the MySQL Workbench I get an error like "Can't connect to the MySQL server on unable to
