Vamt 3.1 Unable To Connect To The Wmi Service On The Remote Machine
12:49 AM Reply | Quote Answers 5 Sign in to vote Thank you for the additional information, this is what I suspected was happening above. VAMT treats the domain name of the Active Directory server as authoritative when machines are discovered using "Search for computers in the Active Directory". For most environments this is correct, but for environments where the AD domain does not match the actual DNS, this will not work. Adding a dcom is not enabled machine by IP address should work fine, you should also be able to add "machine.region.domainname" as long as you are using "Manually enter name or IP address". You may need to delete the [bad] "machine.domainname" row first. If addingmany machines using the manual method is too tedious due to the size of your environment, you might be able to write a script to do most of the work for you using VAMT's command line interface: vamt.exe /a /computer:

I am going to test it on one of our PCs. I'm pretty new to AD/GP so thanks with the noob question. 0 Anaheim OP m1ckrz Sep 4, 2014 at 11:25 UTC I just configured our GP to set WRM to automatic and run. When I went to the machine, I ran gpupdate /force (successfully) but https://community.spiceworks.com/topic/576485-vamt-unable-to-connect-to-wmi-even-after-updated-firewall-settings noticed the services was still set to manual. Shouldn't the machine pull the service state from policy or do I have to to a full reboot? Regardless, I manually started the service and set it to automatic but still no joy; same error. 0 Thai Pepper OP RobT64 Sep 5, 2014 at 12:12 UTC Is this only on one machine or multiple machines? I am stumped as to what it could be. I have configured the host firewall to allow WMI-In, and configured the client for WMI-In, WMI-Out, ASync-In, DCOM-In and allowed remote access/sharing. Any other ideas? 0 Thai Pepper OP Best Answer RobT64 Sep 8, 2014 at 1:56 UTC As a diagnostic, temporarily switch the firewall off on the client and try it. Then if that doesn't work, do the same on the server. If it still doesn't work it's nothing to do with firewalls, (make sure you turn em back on). Then move on to diagnosing the VMI problem itself. Posted by Bhargav in Firewall, PowerShell, Windows Server If you are Microsoft’s volume license customer or an MSDN subscriber, the question http://www.bhargavs.com/index.php/2013/01/28/vamt-unable-to-connect-to-wmi-service-on-remote-machine/ of tracking usage of your volume license activation may have surfaced. http://superuser.com/questions/619135/how-to-enable-the-wmi-service-on-many-machines-to-find-ms-office-licenses-using You may already know what Volume Activation Management Tool (VAMT) is. If you aren’t, you can read more about it here. Since I often build and rebuild my lab VMs, I keep track of my licenses using VAMT 3.0. Today, I built a new unable to physical server that is going to be a Hyper-V host within my lab infrastructure. I chose to build it with minimal overhead, thus selected option to deploy server core instead of full GUI. After I assigned IP and joined the domain, I was able to connect to it using Server Manager from another Server 2012 server unable to connect which I routinely use for managing my lab hosts. However, when I tried to refresh it’s licensing data in VAMT, it gave me an error: unable to connect to wmi service on remote machine Since I was able to manage the server remotely using server manager, it was clear that firewall rules for remote management were enabled correctly. This was accomplished when I used sconfig to configure my host after it was installed. The screenshot below shows the option: Looking at VAMT requirements, I figured, it has to be WMI access through firewall which isn’t configured. Here’s how you can check for it: Get-NetFirewallRule -Enabled False | Where DisplayName -Match "Windows Management I" | FT Name,DisplayName –AutoSize The result of the above cmdlet showed built-in WMI rules that were disabled in firewall: Name DisplayName--- -------WMI-RPCSS-In-TCP Windows Management Instrumentation (DCOM-In)WMI-WINMGMT-In-TCP Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI-In)WMI-WINMGMT-Out-TCP Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI-Out)WMI-ASYNC-In-TCP Windows Management Instrumentation (ASync-In) All I had to do was run the following to enable them: Enable-NetFirewallRule -Name WMI-RPCSS-In-TCP,WMI-WINMGMT-

Every workstation should have MS-Office installed on it, but not all of them are registered. Unfortunately I'm not sure that every workstation in the place is configured to pickup the licenses. I've gotten alot of Unable to connect to the WMI service on the remote machine errors. I have used both VAMT 2.0 and 3.0 and I find that 3.0 is far more useful as it maintains a database you can query for licensing and can also store keys. share|improve this answer edited Jul 17 '13 at 16:23 Raystafarian 17.1k94378 answered Jul 17 '13 at 15:52 user238772 1 add a comment| Your Answer draft saved draft discarded Sign up or log in Sign up using Google Sign up using Facebook Sign up using Email and Password Post as a guest Name Email Post as a guest Name Email discard By posting your answer, you agree to the privacy policy and terms of service.
