Middleware Error Unable To Gpt Format

Error: Failed To Wipe Ada0: Dd: /dev/ada0: Operation Not Permitted
I'm confused as to why dd isn't working. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. The only thing about this drive

What does dmesg show for ada0? What version of FreeNAS are you using etc.? What kind of disk / controller are you using? poolblimpyboyUser15 postsPosted on 11 November 2012 @ 08:33I have a root-on-ZFS install (0.2.0-beta8) on two mirrored drives (ada0 & ada1): [root@zfsguru ~]# zpool status pool: root-pool state: ONLINE scan: scrub repaired 0 in 0h4m with 0 errors on Thu Nov 8 07:31:20 2012 http://zfsguru.com/forum/zfsgurusupport/494 config: NAME STATE READ WRITE CKSUM root-pool ONLINE 0 0 0 mirror-0 ONLINE 0 0 0 https://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-1116773.html gpt/lbl1 ONLINE 0 0 0 gpt/lbl2 ONLINE 0 0 0 errors: No known data errors All is working fine and I now want to add a third mirror using ada2, but in trying to format this drive to GPT I get the error: Creating GPT partition scheme on ada2gpart: geom 'ada2': File exists Drive ada2 is a new'ish drive which I think is in good unable to shape, but I have used it in the past for a previous test ZFS install. I suspect the residue from an old pool remains on the drive as I now can't seem to make use of the drive as my third mirror in my existing root-pool. A search for deleted pools results in: pool: tank id: 13167290410774490080 state: FAULTED (DESTROYED) status: One or more devices are missing from the system. action: The pool cannot be imported. Attach the missing devices and try unable to gpt again. The pool was destroyed, but can be imported using the '-Df' flags. see: http://illumos.org/msg/ZFS-8000-3C config: tank FAULTED corrupted data mirror-0 DEGRADED 15421378791904769 UNAVAIL cannot open ada2 ONLINE How can I destroy any trace of old pool structures and use the disk in my new root-pool? One additional bity of background is that I had to run sysctl -w kern.geom.debugflags=17 in order to be able to carry out a 'Zero-write the part area' on ada2 - is that also a result of some old ZFS structures remaining on the disk? Although I was then allowed to zero-write ada2, the subsequent 'format with GPT' fails with the 'File exists' error listed above. If you need debugflags, either you are a VERY intelligent FreeBSD developer, or you did something wrong and are trying to FORCE something that you should not be able to do. Debugflags allow you to overwrite a disk that is 'in use' by a GEOM module. This means you can overwrite metadata and basically access a disk that is in use. This is excessively dangerous and not recommended! The way you did things may also have destroyed 'evidence' as to why your disk was unable to format. For example, if you used this disk in other RAID array like Windows onboard RAID or hardware RA

The drive was originally used in my freeNAS box, so it was formatted with UFS. However, I now want to use it in my Kubuntu box so I'm trying to reformat it to EXT3. Thats where my problem is: It won't reformat. I've tried gparted and 'wipe'ing the partition clean (wipe /dev/sdg1). Every time I list my drives with 'sudo fdisk -l', I get that the drive is formatted with "EFI GPT" and a warning saying that "GPT (GUID Partition Table) detected on '/dev/sdg'! The until fdisk doesn't support GPT". Output of fdisk -l: <...my other disks info...> WARNING: GPT (GUID Partition Table) detected on '/dev/sdg'! The util fdisk doesn't support GPT. Use GNU Parted. I reformatted it to ext3 with gparted, and didn't notice that fdisk still had it listed as EFI GPT. I was able to use it for a bit in my linux box but noticed that some files (movie files) would play fine, but were unable to be copied off of the disk. It was really weird. When I would play the files in a media player, they played fine the whole way through, but when I tried to copy them to another drive (either different folder on the same drive or different physic
