If you've been vacationing in Bali for the past few months and haven't kept up with this hot topic, here it is in unable to activate a nutshell: Certain Microsoft products, such as Windows XP and Office XP, require you to activate them, either over the Internet or by phone, with a special code that identifies the product and the machine you're installing it on. Microsoft says that minor upgrades to your machine, such as adding hard disks or memory, shouldn't cause the product-activation software to think you're trying to violate your license agreement. And if you must reinstall the XP software, you can call Microsoft for a new activation code. Many people talk about this activation process in a theoretical sense, but I've actually had to go through it. In the course of testing a dual-processor AMD workstation last week, I had my first run-in with the Microsoft product-activation bogeyman. [fixed] Ok I have MS Office XP Standard for Students and Teachers. I have always been able to activate this software very simply online through the on-screen prompts. However now it says "unable to process your request at this time...Try the telephone option(0xb017)." When I try telephone option there is no number displayed only a blank where the number should be. I imagine that this is due to MS no longer supporting my older version of office. But is there a way I can continue to use my software?? It says 45 uses remaining until activated. Can I delete the data.dat file and reset the counter? Thanks as always, me Last edited: Sep 27, 2011 bonafide, Sep 26, 2011 #1 voyagerfan99 Master of Turning Things Off and Back On Again Staff Member Messages: 22,056 Does it give you the option to enter another product key? If so, try re-entering in your key. Otherwise, uninstall and reinstall. voyagerfan99, Sep 26, 2011 #2 GaryCantley New Member Messages: 299 bonafide said: ↑ When I try telephone option there is no number displayed only a blank where the number should be.Click to expand... Have you selected your country? Obviously the number wont appear before this. I have been caught out by that in the past. Its not the "counter" on your end that needs resetting, but the one on MS's end. It's not the phone number that doesn't appear. I think it's the other set of numbers....it's like 40-something digits long. voyagerfan99, Sep 26, 2011 #4 bonafide Member Messages: 68 Okay I did an uninstall/reinstall. Same thing though I attached some screen shots, thought it might help
