(RSA) has been generated with ssh-keygen in Linux, and I can login from Linux without issue. This morning, I wanted to do the same with Putty in Windows XP, so I just copied the private key to Windows and loaded it in Putty, but it failed: Shell Unable to use key file "F:\Downloads\cnxsoft\a1000\id_rsa" (OpenSSH SSH-2 private key) 1 Unable to use key file "F:\Downloads\cnxsoft\a1000\id_rsa" (OpenSSH SSH-2 private key) After a few minutes of research, pscp unable to use key file I found my answer on UbuntuForums, and the reason it fails is because Putty does not support openssh keys, but uses its own format. Here's what I had to do: Convert OpenSSH private key to Putty private key with Putty Key Generator (puttygen) Start puttygen, and click on Conversions->Import key, then click Browse and select the private key generated with openssh (e.g. id_rsa). Then click on Save private key (e.g. id_rsa_putty.ppk) Putty SSH login with private key. Now you can start Putty, enter the machine IP address or url as usual, then go to Connection->SSH->Auth. Click Browse, and select your private key file (e.g. id_rsa_putty.ppk), go back to Session and save the session. You should now be able to login to the server. in the %PATH% variable. It then gives some instructions for using Putty. I knew puttygen tool. Putty was installed on this Windows box, so I pulled it up and fed in the specs it gave (host, port, pageant couldn't load this key (unable to open file) username, and private key). However, when I tried to connect, I got the following error message: Unable to use key file "C:\Users\etucker\.vagrant.d\insecure_private_key" (OpenSSH SSH-2 private key) I did some digging and found that you need http://www.cnx-software.com/2012/07/20/how-use-putty-with-an-ssh-private-key-generated-by-openssh/ to convert the vagrant private key file to a putty private key (.ppk) file. You can do that with PuttyGen: If you do not yet have PuttyGen installed (check first, because it is often installed with Putty), you can download it from: http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/download.html. Open PuttyGen. Click the "Load" button next to "Load an existing private key file". When the dialog box opens to find the existing private key file, http://www.alittleofboth.com/2014/04/putty-unable-to-use-vagrants-private-key/ navigate to the directory where your vagrant private key is stored (usually in C:\Users\

Felix_Esteban 2013-06-27 05:46:01 UTC #3 Hello I have already tried to use unable to putty to convert the pem file but it also stated that it cannot because its not a private key. Kunal1234gh 2013-06-27 05:59:52 UTC #4 Hello Felix, PuTTY does not natively support the private key format generated. Fortunately, PuTTY has a tool called PuTTYgen, which can convert keys to the required PuTTY format.
convert your private key Start PuTTYgen (e.g., from the Start menu, click All Programs > unable to use PuTTY > PuTTYgen). Click Load and browse to the location of the private key file that you want to convert (keyname.pem). By default, PuTTYgen displays only files with extension .ppk; you'll need to change that to display files of all types in order to see your .pem key file. The private key file must end with a newline character or PuTTYgen cannot load it correctly. Select your .pem key file and click Open. PuTTYgen displays a message. When you click OK, PuTTYgen displays a dialog box with information about the key you loaded, such as the public key and the fingerprint. Click Save private key to save the key in PuTTY's format.
