The more specific error number listed in the Windows Update Log is update error 80244019 0x80072F05 From the searches I've done at Google, I gather this error is common to all versions of Windows. What I've done so far in trying to solve this problem: Formatted the hard disk and reloaded Windows 98, replaced the memory, changed the main board bus speed and slowed the processor, slowed the memory clock from 133 to 100. (Memory is PC133.) Any suggestions? This is the most likely cause of this error. If those settings are correct, then check that valid SSL certificates are installed on the computer using the steps below. 1. Open Internet Explorer, click "Tools," and then click "Internet Options." 2. Select the "Contents" tab and click "Certificates." 3. Select the "Trusted Root Certification Authorities" tab. 4. Check for a certificate called "Microsoft Root Authority." 5. Double-click it. 6. On the "General" tab, make sure that t

Discussed here are some of the methods that have been found to resolve the issue. Note: Steps listed here are for Internet Explorer 7. Method 1: Delete Temporary Internet Files In your Internet Explorer window, open Tools menu, and then select Internet Options. Next, on the General tab click the Delete button. On the Delete Browsing History dialog box, click the following buttons to clear the temporary Internet Files: Delete Cookies Delete Files Clear History Restart Internet Explorer and try to run the Windows Update again. Method 2: Check Internet Explorer Security And Content Settings Open the Internet Options dialog box in Internet Explorer and then display the Security tab. Here, select Trusted Sites and then click Default Level. Next, click the Sites button and then in the Trusted Sites dialog box, clear the Require server verification (https:) for all sites in this zone check box. Type each of the following URLs in the Add this website to the zone dialog box and then click the Add button. http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ https://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ http://download.windowsupdate.com/ Finally click Apply and then OK to confirm your decision and then exit the dialog box. Note: Ensure that none of these websites are included in the Restricted Sites section. Next, if you are using Windows XP, then display the Content tab in the Internet Options dialog box. Here, click the Clear SSL State button to clear the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) state. Next, on the General tab click the Delete button and then clear the AutoComplete by clicking the following buttons: Clear Forms Clear Passwords Restart Internet Explorer and try to run the Windows Update again. Method 3: Ensure that your Internet Explorer uses SSL 2.0 and SSL 3.0 Open the Internet Options dialog box in Internet Explorer and then display the Advanced tab. Scroll down and ensure that the Use SSL 2.0 and Use SSL 3.0 check boxes are selected-select them if they are not. Also, clear the Check for server certificate revocation if it is selected.
