Where it's exactly depends on your server and settings. Eg. in apache2 log file is defined in ErrorLog in your config or in virtual host. share|improve this answer answered Oct 18 '13 at 17:12 Elon Than 6,72521332 ErrorLog is set to ${APACHE_LOG_DIR}/error_log. Join them; it only takes a minute: Sign up How can I make PHP display the error instead of giving me 500 Internal Server Error up vote 64 down vote http://stackoverflow.com/questions/19455322/how-to-debug-internal-server-error favorite 16 This has never happened before. Usually it displays the error, but now it just gives me a 500 internal server error. Of course before, when it displayed the error, it was different servers. Now I'm on a new server (I have full root, so if I need to configure it somewhere in the php.ini, I can.) Or perhaps its something with Apache? I've been putting up with it by just transferring the http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2687730/how-can-i-make-php-display-the-error-instead-of-giving-me-500-internal-server-er file to my other server and running it there to find the error, but that's become too tedious. Is there a way to fix this? apache php share|improve this question asked Apr 22 '10 at 1:45 Rob 2,340154890 2 That sounds like an apache problem, not a PHP problem. Apache will throw a 500 any time it has configuration issues (like bad syntax in .htaccess). Check your apache error log for an error message. –Frank Farmer Apr 22 '10 at 1:48 add a comment| 5 Answers 5 active oldest votes up vote 106 down vote accepted Check the error_reporting, display_errors and display_startup_errors settings in your php.ini file. They should be set to E_ALL and "On" respectively (though you should not use display_errors on a production server, so disable this and use log_errors instead if/when you deploy it). You can also change these settings (except display_startup_errors) at the very beginning of your script to set them at runtime (though you may not catch all errors this way): error_reporting(E_ALL); ini_set('display_errors', 'On'); After that, restart server. share|improve this answer edited Jan 7 '13 at 15:01 Davide Palmieri 4891519 answered Apr 22 '10 at 1:49 awgy 6,43821616 1 Thanks, solved the problem –Rob Apr 22 '10 at 2:44 Helped me too.. –hairynuggets May 25 '12 at 13:50
through the steps required to successfully diagnose and debug a 500 error. 500 errors can be a pain but if you go through this guide you will be able to address them and that will give you enough information to fix them. Before are the https://kb.pressable.com/troubleshooting/debug-500-error/ three things that you will be needing to accomplishing this. 1. SFTP credentials 2. SFTP client 3. Text Editor 500 errors can trigger on both on the frontend as well as the backend. The first thing you need to know about 500 http://www.cyberciti.biz/tips/http-error-500-internal-server-for-php-pages-and-solution.html errors is that it is an indicator of some error in code. The debug log provides you specific details of the error, we are going to be looking for “fatal” errors. Check out this link for a brief description of what a 500 500 error error mean, http://www.checkupdown.com/status/E500.html. Below is a sample of what a 500 error may look like in your browser. Step 1 In order to access your debug log you will need to first turn on the debugging and then access the debug log. If you don’t already have access to your site via SFTP, log into your my.pressable.com accout, there your will find a tab named “Users/FTP” Once you are on that page, you will see something similar to what you see below. Note the information you will http 500 error need is as follows: the URL, Port, Username, and Password (to get password, click on the Reset Password). This information will be needed if to access your site via SFTP. If order to acess your site via SFTP you will need an FTP client, we recommend using Filezilla, this is on both windows and OS X, you can find it here https://filezilla-project.org/. Once you install it you will see something like you see below. When you see that, enter the information you got from your my.pressable.com page and Click Quickconnect. Once you have logged in you will see the directory on the right that will be the folder structure of your website and will look like what you see below. Click on the folder “htdocs” Once you are in that folder you will need to access the file called “wp-config.php”. You will need to right-click on it and select "View/Edit". This will download the file. After that it should open the wp-config file in your defualt text editor. You will need scroll down and find the section that is pictured below. By default your debug log will be set to false. You will need to change that text to “true”. Be sure to NOT edit anything else in that document as it can render your site unusable. Once you have saved the file, upload it to the same directory by just dragging that file in the directory to overwrite the previous one. When this happens, this tells WordPress to start logging any errors in code as they happen. A
October 24, 2006 in Apache, lighttpd, TroubleshootingYou get "500 - Internal server error" error message when a user tries to access your Apache or Lighttpd based dynamic php application (such as forum or blog software).
Generally, to solve this problem you need to take help of log files located at following location: => /var/log/message => /var/log/httpd/error_logs (/var/log/lighttpd/error_log or /var/log/httpd/error_log)So you may be wondering why your PHP script throws an Internal Server Error 500.This error only occurs because of web server software. However after looking through logs you may not find many details. This problem may be caused by:A malformed php cgi scriptAn invalid directive in an .htaccess or other config fileLimitation imposed by file system and server software (for example php log file size set to 10Mb)Missing php.ini (or cannot read php.ini file)In most case it is an invalid .htaccess directive. However recently I came across a web server w/o /etc/php.ini file. A long time ago I setup this server )Apache chrooted jail). So you need to maintain two files one outside jail and another inside jail: => /etc/php.ini => /chroot/etc/php.ini <-- this file was missing Many scripts open this file on fly to get correct configuration directives. If this file not found you get error 500. It took some time to figure out this problem. Finally strace helped me out to debug this problem. For me it was another day with another interesting problem ;) Share this on:TwitterFacebookGoogle+Download PDF version Found an error/typo on this page?About the author: Vivek Gite is a seasoned sysadmin and a trainer for the Linux/Unix & shell scripting.
