I have a server running FTP 'out there' I can connect to it using the admin account, browse files, download files. When I try to upload files, I get http://serverfault.com/questions/75998/ftp-access-denied-when-uploading-to-server 550 Access Denied. I have tried through FileZilla and command line. I have windows firewall turned off (on my machine) I can UPLOAD files from another machine (using the same admin account) on our local network (that means, same public IP) what is the problem? I am running Windows 7, Build 7100 and the other machine on the network is running XP SP3 The thing that gets me though, is that this worked for the last probably 4 months, without a problem, I get back in the office after a weekend today and it won't work... ftp upload share|improve this question asked Oct 19 '09 at 5:16 Albert migrated from stackoverflow.com Oct 19 '09 at 16:48 This question came from our site for professional and enthusiast programmers. I don't have an answer but only a suggestion. If it is not secure ftp, try sniffing traffic using a packet sniffer such as SmartSniff or ethereal in both machines to see what exactly goes over the wire while you try the ftp, the difference should have the answer. –Murali Oct 19 '09 at 5:42 add

My issue is as follows. I've set the owner of /var/www to myuser:www-data and permissions of the folder and all (currently just the basic index.html) it's content to 750, and Apache seems to run it as supposed, but I can't access is denied access it when I FTP into the server as the myuser user. I mean, I can access it, but as soon as I try to edit, delete or add something I just get 500 Permission denied, and if I try to edit the permissions I get 500 Unknown SITE command. Help! What do I do wrong? The idea on setting the user and group, and then the permissions as above was from a good friend of mine who is sort of an expert, but I feel like I'm bothering him when I ask so many questions, so if you can help me some more, that would be great! I'm trying to put a backup with 4 vhosts back into the www-folder, but what I put there shouldn't be of any concern, right? That's just the confing of the vhosting later that has got anything to do with that, right? Thanks in advance! Added info: I ran this: myuser@myserver:/$ groups myuser And got this: myuser : myuser adm cdrom sudo dip plugdev lpadmin sambashare Then I ran this: myuser@myserver:/$ groups www-data And got this: www-data : www-data And then this: myuser@myserver:/var/www$ ls -l And got this: total 4 -rwxr-x--- 1 tjita1 www-data 177 Jan 25 17:45 index.html Regarding the ftpserver, I didn't do anything in particular, I just installed vsftpd. The FTP user account does not have permission to either create a new file, or overwrite an existing file, in the current remote directory. The fix is on the server-side: either fix the directory permissions to allow the FTP user access, or fix the permissions of the FTP user so that it's possible, or both. It is impossible for Chilkat to provide specific help with server-side administration issues, especially because the solution depends on the operating system, the brand of FTP server, as well as all the complexities that may be involved regarding how the system might be configured/administered. The solution is really in the hands of the server's system administrator. link answered Jan 02 '13 at 09:35 chilkat ♦♦ 11.6k●316●358●418 Your answer toggle preview community wiki Follow this questionBy Email:Once you sign in you will be able to subscribe for any updates hereBy RSS: Answers Answers and Comments Markdown Basics *italic* or __italic__ **bold** or __bold__ link:[text](http://url.com/ "title") image?![alt text](/path/img.jpg "title") numbered list: 1.
