The Blue Screen of Death will keep your PC from booting and the messages are usually pretty cryptic. This message is no different. What it means is that the SOFTWARE registry key is corrupt. Fortunately, the fix for this error is not as painful as the message would lead you to believe. The following steps must be taken to fix this error: -Boot your PC from the Windows 2000 or Windows XP CD and go into the recovery console by choosing “R” -Type the following at the command prompt to replace your current SOFTWARE registry key with a repair copy. ren c:\windows\system32\config\software software.old
copy c:\windows\repair\software c:\windows\system32\config -Then reboot your PC. If your computer is just part of a workgroup, you should be back in business. However, if you computer is part of a Domain, you may have to reinstall some applications and run: gpupdate /force This will refresh group policy. In any case the steps in outlined above should let you log back in to your PC. written by MG \\ tags: Win
belt have probably come across the Windows XP corrupted registry hive problem at some point in their career. When it happens, Windows wont start and will present one of these messages: Windows XP could not start because the https://www.technibble.com/how-to-fix-windows-registry-hive/ following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM Windows XP could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SOFTWARE Stop: c0000218 {Registry File Failure} The registry cannot load the hive (file): \SystemRoot\System32\Config\SOFTWARE or its http://xphelpandsupport.mvps.org/how_do_i_repair_a_stop.htm log or alternate In most cases, Safe mode wont work either. The uniform approach to fixing this is by getting into the Windows XP repair console and manually replacing the file with the copy that was cannot load created when the system was first installed. However, any software or drivers (depending on whether it was SOFTWARE or SYSTEM that failed) that was installed after that point may not work since the registries for them hadnt been installed back then. Here is my method that I have been using to fix this. It reverts the registry to only a few days earlier rather than back to when Windows was first installed. Note: registry cannot load You will need access to a working computer to create a boot CD. You will also need a fairly good knowledge of computers, BIOS and registry editing in order to do this. This article is aimed towards computer technicians. 1. If you don't have it already, download UBCD4Win using one of the mirrors here. If you do already have it on a CD, skip to step 3. To run it, create an ISO and burn it to CD you can read the instructions here. I wont write the instructions here because the ones on the previous link are better and this article is more targeted at computer technicians and most of them already have this CD. 2. Once the CD has been created, goto the BIOS and make sure your CDRom is set as the first boot device. Start up the computer with UBCD4Win in the CDRom and you will have some boot options. Choose the "Launch The Ultimate Boot CD for Windows" option. It will take a few minutes to load fully, but when it does you should see a Windows XP like interface like in the picture below: 3. In the UBCD4Win interface, goto Start > Programs > Registry Tools > Registry Restore Wizard. 4.The program will then ask you which Windows re

How Do I Repair A Stop c0000218 {Registry File Failure} The Registry Cannot Load Hive (File): \SystemRoot\System32\Config\Software Error This type of error usually indicated that the pc has refused to start because of a corruption within the registry. The following should remedy the problem. However, it is important that you replace all five registry hives. Simply replacing one or two could, potentially, cause other problems. NOTE You should not use the method two set of instructions below if your system has an OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) copy of Windows XP. Doing so will render your operating system inoperable. OEM installations create passwords and user name that did not previously exist. Therefore, in your own interest, these instructions will not remedy the problem. The easiest option with OEM copies of XP is to reinstall XP using the manufacturer’s recovery disks. Easy Method Restart your PC. Keep tapping the F8 Button until a menu appears. When the menu appears use the UP and DOWN arrow keys to select the ‘Last known good configuration’ option. 4/ Once selected press Enter. Your PC should now reinstall the ‘last know good configuration file’. Restart your PC and see if the problem has been solved. If it hasn’t, go on to the next method below. Slightly Easy Method This fix was contributed by Peter Hayes. While this fix is not 'guaranteed' to repair the problem it is worth going through the procedure before stepping up to the harder method. Insert the Windows XP CD into the CD-ROM and restart your pc. At the Welcome to Setup screen press R to start the recovery Console 3/ The Recovery Console will now open and the list of Windows installations will appear. As you only have one installation on your PC you need to press the number which is relevant to your installations location. This, obviously, will typica
