This issue occurs in both my Ubuntu 12.04 machine and my WIn7 machine. Trillian on my windows machine connects just fine to MSN, http://askubuntu.com/questions/561478/pidgin-will-not-connect-to-msn-any-longer so I dont suspect a network issue. My settings are: messenger.hotmail.com Port: 1863 Proxy type. Use environmental settings The "use HTTP method option results in it actually trying to connect, but it never does, it just says "connecting.....". I have attempted to change just about every other setting, with no luck. What could be going on? connection pidgin msn share|improve this question asked Dec 15 '14 at 0:52 Banquo 2113 add a comment| 2 Answers 2 active oldest votes up vote 2 down vote If I were to guess, I'd say it stopped working slightly more than 6 weeks ago, when the MSN messenger network was closed down, so I don't know what Trillian is connecting to. Microsoft wants you to move to skype, which is available for ubuntu, and you should be able to log in using the same microsoft account and find all your friends still there. share|improve this answer answered Dec 15 '14 at 1:04 Sir Substance 1466 Aren't I just with the times. :/ Idon't suppose there is a way to get skype on pidgin without the skype client runnning. –Banquo Dec 15 '14 at 3:18 and very odd my trillian client sti

Submitted by pete_pa on January 20, 2015 - 10:21am I haven't used Pidgin much these days, so when I opened it recently I noticed none of my MSN contacts were online. I checked my accounts and saw that MSN was disabled. So I enable it, and it keeps showing an error message. I thought it was because of 2-step verification, so I turned that off, and still get the error. I read all about MSN messenger shutting down, but I just assumed 3rd party software would still have it running somehow. The error message is: "Connection error from Notification server: Connection refused." Any thoughts? Log in or register to post comments John T. Haller January 20, 2015 - 11:09am Permalink Dead MSN, the network itself, was shut down. So, it doesn't matter what app you use, there's nothing for it to connect to. Migrate to Skype. I've tried it a couple times, hoping every time I installed it that I would come to like it, but nope hehe Log in or register to post comments John T. Haller January 20, 2015 - 1:44pm Permalink Only Option For migrating your old MSN account, Skype is the only option. MSN itself is dead and not coming back. You can always use an alternate network like AIM, Yahoo, etc, of course. But MSN is no more. Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
