I would expect it to work if you logon as the correct user to start with. The logon process assigns console ownership to the user who logs on so if you logon as root then su - to another user, the console is still owned by root. I recently tried to http://www.backtrack-linux.org/forums/showthread.php?t=31942 download the .iso of backtrack 4, and I used unetbootin just as this site recommended to install on usb drive. All seemed to work, but when I type: startx and press enter, a whole bunch of stuff pops up like (EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.
