I can still play CD's fine, it seems to only be DVDs. I have a Dell XPS 400 running on Windows XP. Any suggestions? There is no built in software codec in Windows of any version dvd decoder error that can decode encrypted DVDs, which is what pre-recorded ("factory") DVDs for movies or videos are. You must install a DVD player program that has a built in software codec that can decode DVDs, such as Power DVD. Once you have installed at least once such program, you can also play DVDs in Windows Media Player, at least you can in newer versions of WMP. If you have an (XP) MCE 20xx version, you can then also play DVDs in Media Center. E.g. CDs or DVDs that come with retail desktop mboards, or the free CD or DVD that often comes with a "bulk" desktop optical drive, often has a free version of Power DVD or some other DVD player program that has the necessary software codec. OR - Buy Power DVD or some other DVD player program that has the necessary software codec at a local place that has software for computers - it has more features when it's a "paid" version. . Report • #2 hardshell89 March 20, 2012 at 13:38:35 You may want to try using VLC player, it is free and will play just about anything. Once I have burned the dvd via Magix my dvd player tells me it's a bad disc, my computer get the error message, Windows Media Player cannot play the DVD because a compatible DVD decoder is not installed on your computer, when I try and play it. I have tried to play other DVD's and I get the same error message. I have re-installed windows media but still get the same message. I did have Nero installed but un-installed this thinking that it may be causing the problem. Installed the Windows xp video decoder and am told that the ligos MPEG video decoder impgvd.ax 4.0.0.104 is not compatible. I know nothing about decoders but have always used window medio before with no problems. I am happy to pay for software that will sort my driver/decoder problems out but would be greatful for some advise.
