My Mums computer won't hook up to the net, shes talked to xnets helpdesk and they have helped her to track down the error message, but they can't get her any further (note my mother is fairly computer illiterate), the error message i have been told is Vista error 1717 Which from what i have searched online this appears to be when windows can't find a modem. as its a laptop the modem is builtin and has been working fine for the last few years with no problems. Also her antivirus appears to have expired at around the same time, I am wondering if that may have something to do with it? (probably not but coincidences normally aren't coincidences when dealing with computers), I don't remember the name of it, its some fairly obscure one from memory (I hadn't heard of it) but it is legit, so will probably replace that with microsoft security essentials. Ok so my question is this 1) How do i fix it, I can't seem to find any threads from anyone who has successfully fixed this problem. i was thinking to uninstall the modem drivers, then reinstall them from the maker

Error 1068. The dependency service or group failed to start." I have the telephony service started but I'm getting another error when I try to start the Secure Socket Tunneling Protocol Service, it says: some services start and stop automatically if they are dial up not used by any other service ... but in order to run "RACM" I need this enabled ... any ideas how to fix this ? Are you trying to set up your computer to dial into another network?Perhaps there is a way to set the system up to do what you want without manipulating the services directly.-Noel Tuesday, December 01, 2009 2:51 PM Reply | Quote 0 Sign in to vote I'm trying to connect to company's VPN and I really have no idea how to set it up without the RAC manager. Vista Home Premium with all service applied. I have an ethernet adaptor installed and functioning. I installed a Agere Systems PCI-SV92PP win modem. The driver is at 2.1.74.0 (the latest). Device Manager properties for the device say it's good to go and diagnostics returns expected results from the AT commands. When I try to define the dial-up connection I get the "Windows could not detect a dial-up modem". I've searched Microsoft and the web and have not found a solution.
