New 06 Feb 2008 #2 Ronaldo Capaverde Guest Re: Vista Dialup error 31 A device attached to the system is not funct I'm glad to see I'm not the only one with this problem! Since January 14th, I have no dial up communication from my notebook. Before this it used to work perfectly. At first time, I tough it was a cell phone company annoyance http://www.vistax64.com/vista-networking-sharing/122038-vista-dialup-error-31-device-attached-system-not-funct.html (I use a Sony Ericsson W810i cell phone to dial internet) and made a couple of calls to them to solve the problem. Nothing happened. Two week and a lot of calls later, they assured that the problem was not there. In order to test my cell phone and the service provided by the telecom, I set up a connection in another computer, using the same cell phone. It worked perfectly. It was not enough to me. Coming back to my notebook, I set up another dial up connection, this time using a landline. Guess what? It does not worked again, reporting the same type of error (code 31, "A device attached to the system is not functioning") I was receiving when trying with the cell phone. Conclusion: the problem is related to Windows Vista Dial Up networking running in my machine. Now, I'm looking some way to reinstall it, what's been showing to be hard even to figure out how to do. If I achieve some success bringing Vista's DUN back to life, I'll report it. By the way, I'm running Windows Vista Business (not sure about service pack level), dual core, 2 GB. Searching around, I found/downloaded rarepair.exe, dial up uninstalled the modem, removed the dialup connection, ran rarepair (rebooted twice) but I still get the error. Ideas? Suggestions? I've uninstalled/re-installed the modem drivers completely (more than once), deleted/created a new dial up connection (more than once). The log shows hand-shaking was successful, it's whatever happens just after the userid/password is authenticated and control passes to the next step. What I've been able to find, the error is related to a corrupt RAS in Vista and the ultimate "solution" is to completely re-install the operating system. That "solution" smells like clearing the picnic table with a bazooka. The entries I've found (using Bing..of course that the rarepair.exe is supposed to fix RAS by un-installing/re-installing it, but I still get error 31. I'm comfortable with editing the registry, re-registering COM dlls, whatever it takes. I just want to avoid, if I can, loosing anything by re-installing Vista (I might as well upgrade to Win7). Thanks again.
