This error code http://www.iinet.com/support/answer.php?id=64 is rather difficult to troubleshoot since there can be many things that cause this error. Follow the instructions below to troubleshoot an error 678.1. Verify that the modem is in sync. The modems sync light (Ready/DSL/Line) should be solid green dial up or solid amber (in the case of a broadmax modem). If the modem is not in sync refer to the check sync knowledge base heading or call into tech support to troubleshoot the problem.2. Verify that there is a solid Ethernet connection between the computer and the modem. A solid connection is indicated by a green link light (labeled link/enet/LAN). Often the link light will blink when there is Ethernet activity between the modem and the PC. If the link light is error 678 dial not on then unplug both ends of the cable and plug them back in, this will "reseat" the cable. If you are still unable to get a link light call into tech support at 866-491-7221 in order to receive further assistance with this issue.3. Make sure that there is no router involved. A router will cause this error every time. If you are using a router you do not need to use the windows XP PPPoE client, however you must set the router to PPPoE authentication. This is covered in the router setup knowledge base article.4. Turn the modem off for 10-15 seconds and t hen turn it back on. When the sync light (Ready/Line/DSL) is solid attempt to reconnect. If your modem does not have a power switch simply unplug the power cable.5. Ensure that the line is properly filtered. Make sure that all phone devices on the line have ADSL Micro Filters installed on them, make sure that there is no ADSL micro filter on the DSL modem. If all filters are correctly installed and you still receive this error the next step is to isolate the line. Do this by removing all phone devices from the line except for the DSL modem, and then attempt to reconnect.6. Are there any software firewalls enabled (Zone Alarm, Norton Internet Security, McAfee Personal Firewall)? Firewalls can cause the connection to fail. If you have any software firewalls enabled disable them and
Blocked Ports IINet Dialup Wizard support homepage / Loading Dialup Error Codes Common Dial up Networking Error Codes Errors 600 through 649 Almost all of these are "hardware" related. Meaning that the modem itself is not responding properly to Windows. The only thing you can really do here is "reset" your modem. And the best way to do that is to turn it off for about 3 minutes. It is often said that it takes 200 seconds for all the static electricity to dry up in the motherboard of the average computer. So the 3 minute rule applies here. Turn the machine off for 3 minutes, and then try again. If it continues happening, the modem may be in trouble. Errors 650 through 699 Error 650 - Generally a sign that Dial-Up Networking (DuN for short) in Windows is NOT working right. The main fix here is a Re-installation of Dial-Up Networking in Windows. DuN is a bunch of applications and detail files that Windows uses to make the connection with the modem, and then the Internet. Error 676/678 - Generally means that the computer is not talking to the modem. These are often bad and tend to indicate a modem driver issue, although often, the modem maybe done for. If a modem fails, this error will come up. Error 680 - Your pet has been playing with that phone line! Yep! The "No Dial Tone" error could be that the phone cord to the modem is unplugged, or damaged. The other option is that the modem did not disconnect properly that last time you went online. Rebooting the computer will often solve the problem in that case. Error 691 - Authentication issue. The connection is working, but you can not get logged in. This is a Username/Password issue 9 out of 10 times. The last one of these could deal with your account and its status. Clear out the username and password boxes completely (hit backspace & delete a couple times to make sure there are no hidden spaces which count as characters) and retype your username and password. Errors 700 and up This series of errors started in the early Windows NT days, and the one thing about them is that they were more definitive than before. This helped identify the issues faster. But since not many of us have NT, these are rare. But when they show up, they are nice and specific. Error 709 - A sign that the settings are not quite right, and should be completely redone. Error 718 - Timeout Error. Not good. But since the modem is waiting for information, generally this could be a phone line issue. A really bad phone line will causes this error. Errors 720/731 - Configu
