I get a -10960 Error installation error. The DVD player is v.5.4 running on MacBook Pro 2GHz (older 2010). Can I download 10.6.8 to my external hard drive and reinstall to MacBook? Would that even have the DVD player? Would I have to erase and install. I do have a retail version of OS X 10.6.3. Or, is there an Apple DVD stand alone download specific to 10.6.8? Have not seen this discussed in other forums. Any help would be appreciated. MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8) Posted on Oct 9, 2012 9:10 AM I have this question too by noondaywitch,Solvedanswer noondaywitch Level 6 (8,147 points) A: A few things there; first off, Intel notebooks are MacBook or MacBook Pros, not PowerBooks which were PPC G3 and G4 models and discontinued in 2005.If the MB is already running 10.6.8, you'll need to erase Macintosh HD to install from the 10.6.3 disc.Core duo (as opposed to Core 2 Duo) will not boot in 64 bit. So a 32 bit player is perfectly fine. Except of course if it's PPC code only, in which case it would be running under Rosetta and that's not ideal for a DVD player.AFAIA, DVD player is updated by the SL retail disc (along with Safari and iTunes), so the correct version should be there. As mine is 5.2, (and I'm running 10.6.4) I would expect the 10.6.8 combo to update that, or Software Update to indicate that an update is available.Incidentally, VLC is a useful application even if you have a good copy of DVD player, as it can play some codecs that DVD Player can't. DVDs, just for the record I have a Mac Pro with 2 superdrives, one region 1, the other region 2 (I live in the UK). Both are Optiarc AD-7170A, firmware 1.N8 I like to watch my DVDs while working at my Mac but I find there are many DVDs that will not play, though they will play both in a traditional DVD player and (horror of horrors) in my Dell. Diagnostics tell me my Superdrives are OK and that the disks are OK. The conclusion is that there is some kind of zero sized sector or deliberately bad index that DVD players can skip but Macs cannot. Frankly, I consider this to be a limitation of DVD Player and would be grateful for any comments on this. Thanks all! Pete Repaly Ummmm My Mac Pro Shipped with a Pioneer DVR-112..one of the best and most reliable DVD PLayers/Burners on the market, so your statemtent about them being rubbish is unfounded. I purchased a second one so that I have two of them. They work Great. You can update the firmware to play ALL regions and they will still be supported fully on the Mac. Thanks P.S. They do use Sony drives too.. I'm not sure how they determine which ship with which computer.
