If you feel confident, take the DVD player apart and clean the Laser-Head with alchohol. This normally does the trick. If of course that still does not work, it's because the head has lost it's "tracking" over the years (DVD players sadly do not last forever). You can by relativly good, all-round players for very little money these days. May be worth investing in a new DVD player (you'll also get all the advantages that newer players have, such as better software that can read MP3s, Divx etc that your old player might not have had).
