It is possible for it to test successfully, but not be in a state to send mail, or even be operating. You may wish to try restarting the service -HOWEVER- be careful! More often than not, I find that shutting down SQL mail just locks it up. I then have to restart SQL Agent, which is also likely to lock up. When I try to restart SQL Server, IT LOCKS UP. We've even had problems where the server failed to come back up on the first reboot. When I open [Server].Management.[SQL Server Agent] in Enterprise Manager, The only option that seems at all relevant is the "Mail Session" section; but the "Mail Profile" field (and everything else in the box) has been grayed out.
