The cap seem to be used to backup the internal RTC. Calibration values and saved measurements are stored in an external EEPROM.Some say Err 1 means that the input protection may be broken, so I started to swap boards between the working unit and the broken one. I found the analog daughterboard (see attached photo) to be the cause of the problem. With the board from the working unit the defective tester works fine, Err 1 is gone. So far so good. Now I started to compare the supply and reference voltages on both units and all match. The unpopulated connector P305 draw my attention and a quick check with my scope showed some kind of serial data - bingo (the pinout is added to the attached photo)I connected a USB <-> TTL serial converter to these pins and captured some data from both testers. The different outputs are quite obvious. These messages might be some error flags from the defective b

The Fluke 1653 came up with Err5. When I checked this in the manual, I found that it stood for Error 5-excessive noise. When I checked a few other parts of the area, they too came up with the same error message. I've never come across this error before, and error 4 I can't see why the area of the appliance should be subject to more noise than other parts of the factory that have large DC motors, invertors, DC drives etc. One of my colleagues had an older type tester and seemed to work OK. Any ideas as to why this error is occurring and if there is a way around it. briwire, 19 Aug fluke 1653 error 2008 #1 comms Joined: 13 Nov 2004 Messages: 882 Thanks Received: 8 Location: Berkshire Country: Had the same a few times, I normaly retest & get a good result. comms, 19 Aug 2008 #2 mattysupra Joined: 30 Jan 2007 Messages: 2,239 Thanks Received: 50 Location: West Midlands Country: Error 5-excessive noise. what does this mean? mattysupra, 19 Aug 2008 #3 Spark123 Joined: 2 Jun 2005 Messages: 14,797 Thanks Received: 467 Location: Cumbria Country: Probably the supply is not a nice AC waveform (sine wave). Can be caused by things like briwire says above. The wiring, amps , use of cables/sizes etc i find easy to understand, but the understanding of how electric works seems to be a different ball game! Seems that when you manage to understand this the rest is simple?
