just now with its security setting by default that stops it from working called error 691. 1.The way to fix this is to go to the properties of the VPN 2.Control Panel, either network and internet, then view network status and tasks and then change adaptor settings on the left panel or change View by:category at top right of control panel to large icons, then network and sharing center, and then change adaptor settings on the left panel. Once in here right click on the VPN connection and scroll down to properties.) 3.In the properties window (left) click on the security tab and under Authentication, click on allow these protocols and tick the MS-CHAP v2 box. 4.If you try to connect this time it should allow you https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/systemcenter/en-US/cfdd19cc-36d8-45f4-b2fe-049dfa24b483/vpn-error-691?forum=w8itpronetworking access unless it comes up with a different error message for a different problem. 5 Comments Poblano Gipper May 29, 2014 at 02:39pm Thanks, not sure what changed, but this solved an issue with one of my Windows 8 users. PHP/MySQL web developer and an iPhone/iPad developer. If you are looking for a freelance developer you can contact me.After upgrading to Windows 8, I ran into an issue where I couldn't VPN into my old Windows Server 2003 machine http://www.keithslater.com/error-691-when-connecting-through-vpn-on-windows-8/ anymore. I kept getting this error: Error: 691: The remote connection was denied because the user name https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vUOvU9d8HJE and password combination you provided is not recognized, or the selected authentication protocol you selected is not permitted on the remote access server. I know that my username and password is correct so I figured it must be something else. Turns out, it's an easy fix. Open your VPN connections properties. Go to the security tab Check "Allow these protocols" and make sure "Microsoft CHAP Version 2" error 691 is checked Select the radio button for "Allow these protocols" That's it I'm guess this is a bug of some sort. Once you select one of the two radio buttons, you can't deselect them which leads me to believe that it is a bug. Hopefully this will be fixed in an upcoming Windows update.
