10 IT Pro > Windows 10 Mobile Question 5 Sign in to rasdial windows 10 vote Okay, so on Windows 10 Mobile, I'm getting the error "the remote access connection completed, but authentication vpn error 691 failed because of an error in the certificate that the client uses to authenticate the server" when trying to connect to a PPTP VPN connection. I know this error! It's https://usaip.eu/en/setup_faq.php error 860! It's when you set up a new VPN connection, but for some reason Windows doesn't choose an authentication method so you have to go into your VPN connection's security settings and manually pick an authentication method. The issue is documented here on another website. But on Windows Phone, there is no advanced interface to resolve this error! When you create the new VPN profile, be sure to select "VPN provider" -> Windows (built-in) Once you have selected that, select your VPN type and then 'Type of sign-in info' (User name and password, Smart Card, One-time password, Certificate). For the longest time I could not select the 'Type of sign-in info', it was very frustrating.....this was a result of not selecting the drop down from the VPN provider. Purpose A while back, I ran across a client that had a VPN utilizing PPTP. The user I was trying to set up was receiving error 691 an Error 806. After a bit of troubleshooting, it was discovered that the user could connect to the VPN with most computers, however when trying to connect via their designated machine, they were receiving an Error 806. For this specific client, they required that their users utilize PEAP Authentication. Additionally, the client did not want to validate the server certificate. Machines that were validating correctly had the ‘Validate server rasphone command line certificate’ option unchecked. However, the problem machine had the box checked. Even after unchecking and reapplying settings, the box would recheck itself. The Cause of Error 806 The underlying cause of this issue was due to the rasphone.pbk file not saving correctly. This file contains saved dial up information (in this case VPN settings). The most common causes I have seen of this file not functioning correctly are due to a Window image being used that already had issues or if a Window’s upgrade was performed. It did not matter if it was Home, Professional, Ultimate, or Enterprise or any combination of 32 bit or 64 bit, the only consistency viewed was that a Window’s image was used.
