PHP/MySQL web developer and an iPhone/iPad developer. If you are looking for a freelance developer you can contact me.After upgrading to Windows 8, I ran into http://www.keithslater.com/error-691-when-connecting-through-vpn-on-windows-8/ an issue where I couldn't VPN into my old Windows Server 2003 machine anymore. I kept getting this error: Error: 691: The remote connection was denied because the user name and password combination you provided is http://compnetworking.about.com/od/vpnsetup/tp/common-vpn-error-codes-explained.htm not recognized, or the selected authentication protocol you selected is not permitted on the remote access server. I know that my username and password is correct so I figured it must be something else. Turns error 691 out, it's an easy fix. Open your VPN connections properties. Go to the security tab Check "Allow these protocols" and make sure "Microsoft CHAP Version 2" is checked Select the radio button for "Allow these protocols" That's it I'm guess this is a bug of some sort. Once you select one of the two radio buttons, you can't deselect them which leads me to believe that it is a bug. Hopefully error 691 windows this will be fixed in an upcoming Windows update. VPNs can be difficult to set up and keep running due to the specialized technology involved. When a VPN connection fails, the client program reports an error message typically including a code number. Hundreds of different VPN error codes exist but only certain ones appear in the majority of cases. Many VPN errors require standard network troubleshooting procedures to resolve:Ensure the computer running the VPN client is connected to the Internet (or other wide area network), and that access to the outside network is workingEnsure the VPN client has correct network settings required to work with the target VPN serverTemporarily turn off the local network firewall to determine whether it is interfering with VPN communications. Some types of VPNs require certain network ports to be kept open VPN Error 800 David Lees/Iconica/Getty Images "Unable to establish connection" – The VPN client cannot reach the server. This can happen if the VPN server is not properly connected to the network, the network is temporarily down, or if the server or network is overloaded with traffic. The error also occurs if the VPN client has incorrect configuration settings. Finally, the local router may be incompatible with the type of VPN being used and require a router firmware update.
