Remote Access Service (RAS) Error Code List then i tried pointing to my Remote Access Phonebook (Rasphone.pbk) and see what happens rasdial MyVPNConnection /phonebook:%userprofile%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Network\Connections\Pbk\rasphone.pbk and still there was an error 691. I've then unchecked the following but still the same problem was reported when executing my batch file. command-line vpn batch-file share|improve this question edited Oct 12 '12 at 16:04 asked Oct 12 '12 at 8:20 plurby 501411 add a comment| 2 Answers 2 active oldest votes up vote 9 down vote accepted The problem was that my VPN connection was using Secure Socket Tunneling Protocol (SSTP) and RASDIAL can't connect to such VPN connection as: RASDIAL.EXE provides unattended dialing. It does not support the following features available in RASPHONE.EXE: prefix/suffix, auto-redial, change password, retry authentication, statistics, operator assisted dialing, and connections requiring Terminal mode input. RASPHONE and RASDIAL: Tips and Differences After i've figured that out i've used RASPHONE to make a connection passing the location of my Remote Access Phonebook (Rasphone.pbk) rasphone -d MyVPNConnection -f %userprofile%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Network\Connections\Pbk\rasphone.pbk And everything worked fine. To disconnect you can still use RASDIAL rasdial MyVPNCon

a single action (double-click) instead of three or more. I recently found that error 691 dial up this trick had a limitation: it only worked because the username and password for my VPN connection were the same as the username and password of the Windows 10 computer I was using (a local account). On another Windows 10 pc that was using a Microsoft account, it failed telling me the http://superuser.com/questions/486741/connect-to-vpn-using-command-line-results-in-error-691 username / password was not correct: Remote Access error 691 - The remote connection was denied because the user name and password combination you provided is not recognized, or the selected authentication protocol is not permitted on the remote access server. Because it worked on the first pc, I assumed that rasdial used the username/password I stored in the VPN configuration. It looks like it https://shiftkeysoftware.wordpress.com/2015/09/25/quickly-connect-to-a-vpn-on-windows-10-revisited/ doesn't, but uses your Windows username/password instead (need to verify this). One could discuss whether that is a bug or a feature, but in the end, the result is that it doesn't work for me. So I started looking for alternatives. Other tricks I found involved storing the username/password in the command file, but I did not want to do that. The solution is to not use rasdial, but it's nephew rasphone. Change the line rasdial "My VPN connection name here" into rasphone -d "My VPN connection name here" Mind the -d before the name of the connection. It shows the familiar connecting dialog, instead of the command line window, and it just works. Error 691: Access denied because rasdial vpn error username and/or password is invalid on the domain. You can try these steps: 1) Verify the logon ID and password are correct. 2) Make sure the Include Windows logon domain check box is unchecked in the Options tab of the dial-up connection's Properties dialog box. 3) Make sure the dial-up connection's security option is correctly configured to use the Require secured password setting. 4) Delete all of the *.pwl files and reboot if you are using win9x. 5) Try another logon ID or create a new Logon ID because the profile may be damaged. PHP/MySQL web developer and an iPhone/iPad developer. If you are looking for a freelance developer you can contact me.After upgrading to Windows 8, I ran into an issue where I couldn't VPN into my old Windows Server 2003 machine anymore. I kept getting this error: Error: 691: The remote connection was denied because the user name and password combination you provided is not recognized, or the selected authentication protocol you selected is not permitted on the remote access server. I know that my username and password is correct so I figured it must be something else. Turns out, it's an easy fix. Open your VPN connections properties. Go to the security tab Check "Allow these protocols" and make sure "Microsoft CHAP Version 2" is checked Select the radio button for "Allow these protocols" That's it I'm guess this is a bug of some sort. Once you select one of the two radio buttons, you can't deselect them which leads me to believe that it is a bug. Hopefully this will be fixed in an upcoming Windows update.
