Source File or Disk" Error Recently, I was working with a client who had a strange problem. He was trying to copy some files on his computer and ended up getting this odd error message: Can't read from the source error copying file or folder the directory or file cannot be created file or disk. What's odd is that he could easily play the file in Windows
Error Copying File Or Folder Cannot Find The Specified File
without a problem. It was only an issue when he tried to copy the file. After playing around with it for a error copying file or folder unspecified error rdp while, we tracked down the problem. In this article, I will mention the different reasons why you may get this error message and what you can do about it. File Size Limits The first thing you want http://www.howtogeek.com/forum/topic/windows-encountered-a-problem-copying-files to look at is how big the file is and where you are copying it too. For example, if your file is a huge 5GB movie file, then you won't be able to copy it to an external hard drive that is formatted with FAT16. A FAT16 formatted drive can only support up to a 2GB file. FAT32 can only hold up to a 4GB file. Most external hard drives and flash drives are formatted http://helpdeskgeek.com/help-desk/fix-cant-read-from-the-source-file-or-disk-error/ in FAT16 or FAT32. Check out this cool site that breaks each format down for you and the max file sizes: http://www.ntfs.com/ntfs_vs_fat.htm For whatever reason, when you try to perform a copy like this, you can sometimes get the "Can't read from source or disk" error message. It doesn't make much sense, but that's what happens. Possible Bad Sectors If you're using an external drive, you could possibly have some bad sectors on the hard drive, which is causing the problem. In this case, you should scan the hard drive using a tool like chkdsk. If there are any errors, it will go ahead and fix them. If you hard drive is going bad, then you may have to simply get a new hard drive. If you're trying to copy from an external drive to your local computer, then try plugging in the external drive into another computer and see if you get the same error. If so, that means the external drive is probably going bad. It's a good idea to at this point to use some third-party program to copy the files off forcefully even if they have errors. I have written about a program called TeraCopy, which will copies files even if they are corrupted. Power and Cables In a few cases, the issue is related to other hardware fa
reality CRC is a data check procedure that checks whether the data to be transferred is transferred successfully or damaged in the process. If you get this message, it means that the file being read by your http://jai-fixyourpc.blogspot.com/2011/09/crc-error-while-copying-or-moving-files.html PC or software is corrupted. However, it does not mean all the data is lost http://superuser.com/questions/308337/invalid-ms-dos-function-error-message-when-copying-a-file forever. When you try to read data from your CD's or DVD's and you got this error means your system is unable to read data from CD and becomes extremely slow and hangs down. The problem can be because of the scratched CD disk, loose cables, bad CD Drive or the software related. If your CD drive reads other CD's then there is error copying no problem with your CD drive and it may be the problem with your CD disk. Another cause of the problem might be the discs that were burnt poorly (with several buffer under runs). Solution: Replace the CD/DVD. If the problem is CD related, then cleaning it can solve the CRC error but if it the same case with most disks, then it must be your CD drive issue. Solution: Replace the CD/DVD Drive. When you try to error copying file copy or move files from one location to another in your hard drive then CRC error indicates a bad sector on your hard drive. The fact that you're seeing it when you try to copy a file indicates that the bad spot may be within the file itself. Solution: First, let's make sure that the problem is actually with the file you're copying since it's equally likely that the problem is with the location you're copying too. This is easy. Fire up a Command Prompt window, and then copy the file to NUL. Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600] (C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp. C:\>CD (to wherever the file is located) C:\wherever>copy Outlook.pst NUL 1 file(s) copied. This reads the entire file by copying it "nowhere". If this succeeds, the problem is not actually with the file itself, but the location (C:/D:/E:) you were trying to copy it to. My recommendation would be to copy it to a different disk entirely, or a different machine on your local network. If this copy fails, then we've confirmed that the bad sector on your hard disk is actually being used by some portion of your file. Backup: For copying to different disk entirely or some other machine on your local network machine entirely we need to do this within the command prompt in order to avoid errors. When copying a movie file (mp4) from a DVD to my PC's hard drive, in Windows Explorer, I'm getting the error: Invalid MS-DOS function. The error message pops up, I cancel out, and the file is not copied at all. I have many other mp4 files on the DVD (I custom ripped it), which copied just fine. What does it mean? How can it be resolved? Update Ok, it seems the file may be corrupt at the end of the movie file, as it causes VLC to hang and crash. windows-7 dvd file-transfer share|improve this question edited Jan 19 '13 at 23:25 cpast 1,98411023 asked Jul 9 '11 at 0:45 spong 1,28962139 Microsoft doesn't bother renaming ancient error messages? –Michal Kováč Jul 30 '14 at 19:09 add a comment| 5 Answers 5 active oldest votes up vote 5 down vote As you confirmed that it is probably corrupt, that is good. Usually it happens because the DVD is copy protected. There may be software that bypasses that, but it is doubtful someone would get that kind of help here as it is frowned upon. share|improve this answer edited Jul 9 '11 at 0:57 answered Jul 9 '11 at 0:51 KCotreau 23.4k43760 I updated my question. The DVD contains other mp4 files which copied over just fine. The DVD is full of mp4 files I made a while ago. –spong Jul 9 '11 at 0:54 OK, I will update my answer then too. :) –KCotreau Jul 9 '11 at 0:55 add a comment| up vote 4 down vote I also received the "Invalid MS-DOS Function" error while copying files, but under a different circumstance: Windows 7, copying files from an SMB share on an Mac OS X Lion machine. (This won't apply to you, but this is the only Super User question referencing "Invalid MS-DOS Function", so I mention it only in hopes of helping someone else!) On the Mac, I opened a Terminal and ran ls -al in the affected directory, and noticed this: drwxr-xr-x@
