By brucelparsons · 9 years ago I do a lot of file transfers. Often a large transfer gets hung up on the "Do you want to copy or move Thumbs.db?" question. I read the advice here as to how you can prevent http://www.techrepublic.com/forums/discussions/copy-or-move-thumbsdb/ the thumbs.db from being created however, doing a lot of photography work, I suspect that if I prevent the thumbs.db from being written it may slow down the workflow. Is there a way to prevent the alert from coming up while still allowing thumbs.db to be written? Can you allow the file to be "copied or moved" by default? The file is a small database of thumbnail images so that you can view a particular folder in thumbnail view. If you move it, it is no longer accurate for the folder it sits in (corrupt) and will simply re-generate itself in the folder you took it out of.If you are FTP'ing files to a server, just don't upload that file. Especially if the server is Unix based because it can't use that file anyway. It's a Windows "thang". 0

Solved Copying files and folders error copying to network drive fails, "Cannot copy thumbs" Posted on 2005-09-06 Windows XP 1 Verified Solution 3 Comments 2,348 Views Last Modified: 2010-05-18 Many clients at my company back up certain folders and files to shared drives simply by dragging or copying/pasting. This has always worked with no problem until recently - some are now coming across an error message error copying file during the transfer that reads, "Cannot copy thumbs: cannot find the specified path. Make sure you specify the correct path." All clients are using Windows XP Professional SP1. I have tried the following things without success: In Windows Explorer Tools > Folder Options > View, checked the box for 'Do not cache thumbnails'. Selected 'Show hidden files and folders'. De-selected 'Hide extensions for known file types' and 'Hide protected operating system files'. Added registry DWord value for 'Disable Thumbnail Cache = 1' in HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced Searched for all instances of thumbs file and deleted them (on both the C drive and the network drive). The issue continues. The files and folders can be copied to other locations on the C drive, but cannot be copied over to a network drive because of the error. I've done a lot of experimenting moving over the files and folders in small batches, but haven't come up with anything conclusive. In some cases, the problem can be worked around by copying the files within each folder, rather than
