foreign language dictionary. Spell Checker; inline spell check; language; dic; spanish; french; german; pop-up error Technote (troubleshooting) Problem User is trying to add foreign language dictionary to the Notes Basic client and copied the .dic file from the server's Domino/Data folder to the local Notes/Data folder. After setting the new language as the default under Spell Check preferences, when trying to run spell check, they get the error: "Error during main dictionary spell initialization" Resolving the problem In this case, the .dic file (espana.dic) was copied from a Domino 8.5.1 data folder to a Notes 8.0.2 client. The error is due to the version mismatch. Copying the language dictionary from a server that's the same version as the client, resolved the problem. The problem is caused by the naming scheme of the system Temp directory in the Windows 2000/NT operating system (OS). By default, the system Temp directory is set up as "C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp". The spell check installation program, however, has a limited amount of space to store the path to the temporary directory and thus, cannot use long paths such as this. This problem was reported to Lotus Quality Engineering, and was addressed in Notes 5.0.8 Client and Notes 6.0 Client. Excerpt from the Lotus Notes and Domino Release 5.0.8 MR fix list (available at link1Editor - SpellingSPR# JGON4LZJEY - Error message "Error during spell initialization" was received by Windows 2000 users when attempting to use spell check on any database.
