Norton Full System Scan Initializing

When I run Quick Scan, I briefly see "Initializing..." then about 5 seconds later, "Error During Scan". If I try running a Full System Scan
Norton Security Error During Scan
the msg "Initializing..." appears, then just hangs there. The file counts remain at 0. If I try to cancel the Full System Scan by clicking on the X in the top right corner, I get the dialog box confirming whether I want to stop the scan, I answer YES but the Full System Scan window remains open. If I look at the Norton Tasks window it shows that a Quick Scan was last ran on 5/10, during idle mode, but it has the status "Stopping" (when I originally checked on this problem yesterday the status was "Running", so I clicked on the "Click to stop job" and it went into this "Stopping" mode, but has remained there. The last time a similar thing happened a month ago, I found a Windows Update that was never fully applied, reapplied that, and then Norton scan worked again. I checked my Windows Updates this time and can't find any problems. I'm running Windows 8.1 64-bit. My Norton product is also update to date. Appreciate any ideas on where to look next.

When I open Norton and select the option to do a full system scan, the scan window shows (in red): Error During Scan. This happens after rebooting my system. If I again select the full system scan option without rebooting, nothing happens (I don't get the scan window or the error message). If I select Quick Scan, that works ok. I previously had Norton Internet Security 2011 installed and I did not have any problems with the full system scan. Nothing happens when I try to run a scan in my Norton product This problem can happen due to a failed update. Download and run the fix tool to resolve this problem. Save the file to the Windows desktop. On your desktop, double-click the NortonMountPointRepair.exe file. By running the tool, you accept the error during Usage Agreement. Restart the computer. After the computer restart, run a Quick Scan. If the problem still persists, go to Step 2. STEP2 Download and run the Norton Remove and Reinstall tool If you have received your Norton product from your service provider, skip this step, and run the Norton Removal Tool. Download the Norton Remove and Reinstall tool. Save the file to the Windows desktop. On error during scan the Windows desktop, double-click the NRnR icon. Read the license agreement, and click Agree. Click Remove & Reinstall, and follow the on-screen instructions. Click Restart Now. After the computer restarts, follow the on-screen instructions to reinstall your Norton product. Thank you!
