My website shows up "Error establishing a database connection" on occasion. This happens about once a day. As soon as I reboot the droplet, the problem's gone. I've tried adding the following 2 lines in my wp-config file, as suggested on some other forums, but it didn't work: define('WP_MEMORY_LIMIT', '64M'); define('WP_ALLOW_REPAIR', true); From what I read around the web, it seems that 512mb of

RAM is perfectly fine for a wordpress multisite, if set correctly - though I'm having a hard time with a single (low content) site, without many plugins. I've also disabled/deleted the plugins that could potentially eat up a lot of memory, such as wp-backup. If you have any suggestions for me, I'd be more than thankful! Please notice that I'm pretty new with all this, and as it's my first time running VPS, I do have a bit hard time understanding how everything works, at the moment... 43 comments 2 stephen640219 September 20, 2015 We have about 20 accounts on DigitalOcean and over the past two months ALL OF THEM have been experiencing this issue, even on droplets with 4GB RAM. We're migrating all of our sites elsewhere... 0 danny429396 October 1, 2015 I have the same problem as well. I often restart the server but each time I restart, same thing happen the next day and this is happening 50% of my websites on DigitalOcean. I do have website hosting elsewhere and they works perfectly fine with lower monthly cost. I'm moving all my websites elsewhere as well. It's just ridiculous. 0 nathanjameshill October 1, 2015

If you think that the info on your wp-config.php file is not correct something most of happen that change it. You can find out your DB name by SSH with the following code set mysql -u root -ppassword SHOW DATABASES To find out the users you can run select * from mysql.user; Lastly to change a password for a user you can run SET PASSWORD FOR 'user-name-here'@'localhost' = PASSWORD('new-password-here'); hope this helps you figure out. Please can someone assist in how I can find the problem, source of problem I should say and hopefully fix it permanently? UPDATE I have a log file here /var/log/mysql.log that has a last modified date/time around the time the MySQL server crashed today. It is an empty file though. Sorting files in that directory /var/log/ by DateTime I can see one of the most recent modified files is called syslog I have pasted the contents of syslog below as near the bottom it mentions MySQL so I feel it may be relevant if someone could try to help me make sense of it please? /var/log/syslog Jun 24 16:17:01 thomaslastname CRON[928]: (root) CMD ( cd / && run-parts --report /etc/cron.hourly) Jun 24 16:32:27 thomaslastname kernel: [2738822.445529] type=1400 audit(1435177947.529:25): apparmor="STATUS" operation="profile_replace" profile="unconfined" name="/usr/sbin/mysqld" pid=1048 comm="apparmor_parser" Jun 24 16:32:29 thomaslastname /etc/mysql/debian-start[1102]: Upgrading MySQL tables if necessary. It's inevitable; it can be your fault, at times systems break, someone fails at their job, natural calamities strike - anything could cause an error. Even something as good as an increase in traffic can break your WordPress site, leaving you with an error and a bad taste in your mouth. Now, just like any other human-made project, WordPress is susceptible to its share of errors, none of which is as baffling and strenuous as the "error establishing database connection" error. That's because this error doesn't come with details of what went wrong, despite that it can be caused by several things, which - of course - only adds salt to the wound. All you get when you try loading your site is: In today's post, we will look a little deeper into this WordPress error, and then cover some of the solutions you can use to restore your site to its former glory. Enjoy and please share your tips and solutions, or ask your questions in the comment section at the end. What Does "Error Establishing a Database Connection" mean? To give you an insider's understanding of the "EEDC" error, we first need to break down WordPress into its two fundamental components. WordPress is built using PHP (e.g. index.php, sidebar.php etc) and MySQL. PHP is in charge of all functions on your WordPress site (e.g. posting comments, retriving posts and pages etc) and MySQL is in charge of data storage. For instance, when you type your URL in the address bar and hit enter, PHP kicks in, fetches and displays the contents of the homepage (index.php) from your MySQL database.
