were disastrous for me. I was at my wits end. I have a shared hosting plan with Bluehost and also use the free Cloudflare service. So not a lot of resources at my error establishing a database connection wordpress localhost disposal either. Errors of the sort shown in the screenshot below would often disappear if I refreshed the page. I tried just "waiting it out" figuring that Bluehost was having issues at their end, but it continued on for several days. At times my blog would become completely unresponsive and just sit there trying to connect and would then show an error page. Later, my server error establishing a database connection website logs revealed that I was getting around 1500 error results on my site every day! That meant legitimate visitors were being forced to wait for long periods of time and ultimately not getting the content they came for. Sudden WordPress Database Error The WordPress forums didn't help. They all dealt with issues like the password combo being wrong, or replacing "localhost" with the name of the server in wp-config.php. But none of these account for the fact that the errors were random. If there was really a configuration problem, they wouldn't vanish on a page refresh. Besides, I've been maintaining this blog for several years now and there's never been anything of this sort before. I hadn't changed anything. So I called Bluehost to complain. After the woman on the other end spent time consulting with the tech person, she told me that my site was getting overwhelmed by visitors. The shared plan I was on allowed only 15 database connections per second. She told me to be happy that I had outgrown the plan I was on! I told her this wasn't possible because my Google analytics wasn't showing any such dramatic increase

This is where most errors occur. -Then check that you don't need to change the database host from "localhost" to something

My website shows up "Error establishing a database connection" on occasion. This happens about once error establishing a day. As soon as I reboot the droplet, the problem's gone. I've tried adding the following 2 lines in my wp-config file, as suggested on some other forums, but it didn't work: define('WP_MEMORY_LIMIT', '64M'); define('WP_ALLOW_REPAIR', true); From what I read around the web, it seems that 512mb of RAM is perfectly fine for a wordpress multisite, if set correctly - though I'm having a hard time with a single (low content) site, without many plugins. error establishing a I've also disabled/deleted the plugins that could potentially eat up a lot of memory, such as wp-backup. If you have any suggestions for me, I'd be more than thankful! Please notice that I'm pretty new with all this, and as it's my first time running VPS, I do have a bit hard time understanding how everything works, at the moment... 43 comments 2 stephen640219 September 20, 2015 We have about 20 accounts on DigitalOcean and over the past two months ALL OF THEM have been experiencing this issue, even on droplets with 4GB RAM. It is possible that the database is overloaded or otherwise not running properly. The site administrator should also check that the database details have been correctly specified in config.php" I am on a hosted web server. Executing a manual refresh of the browser removes the error message and serves the correct page. I suspect the server I am assigned is overworked. Is there a way to retrieve the actual MySQL error so that I can confront my hosting service with an argument backed by concrete information? Is it my host or do I have something configured incorrectly? I will not be able to respond to queries for a couple of days. But I wanted to get this out so that it can be looked at by many people. I appreciate all responses and suggestions.
