I tried it with genkernel 3.4.8 and 3.4.9 and get the same results. I'm speechless... does anyone know what this

I http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-kernel-70/genkernel-error-606986/ am making some change to kvm kernel module and testing it. So this is what I do after making some change in the kernel source. make M=arch/x86/kvm After this I am able to successfully insert the kernel module. By mistake I did make mrproper which cleans all the binaries and byproducts on a linux compile. So, is there a way now to make my kernel module only and insert it into current booted kernel or should http://stackoverflow.com/questions/10541150/inserting-kernel-module-after-make-mrproper I compile the whole kernel again and replace the new vmlinuz with vmlinuz file in /boot. I can do the second option but it takes time and is not the most intelligent way for this small problem. linux-kernel makefile linux-device-driver kernel-module share|improve this question edited May 10 '12 at 21:52 asked May 10 '12 at 19:49 0xhacker 456619 It's been a while, so I may not remember correctly (or things may have changed), but did you try make modules? –Flimzy May 10 '12 at 19:52 1 Running make mrproper removes the kernel configuration, you should try to restore it before trying make M=... modules. –C2H5OH May 10 '12 at 19:57 add a comment| 1 Answer 1 active oldest votes up vote 0 down vote If the kernel is currently running you can try running make cloneconfig. This should configure the kernel tree exactly like the running kernel. The compiled module should then match your kernel. share|improve this answer answered May 10 '12 at 20:08 Turbo J 4,99011124 I am using the kernel source 3.0.27 andmake cloneconfig returns an error with no rule to make target cloneconfig –0xhacker May 10 '12 at 21:42 Might be a SuSE extension. –Turbo J May 11 '12 at 11:07 add a comment| Your Answer draft saved draft discarded Sign up or log in S
