Comments: Gary Mickelson From a newsgroup post: Problem: In Outlook 2003, I have an additional "personal folders" item, which is empty and cannot be deleted. When I click on it, I get the message: "the set of folders cannot be opened" and the when I click help I get the following: "This error usually appears if the OST or PST file you are using is: - Unavailable - Protected with file permissions - On a share on a server and the network is down - Corrupt. To correct this problem store the OST or PST file on the local computer. You may also want to run the scanost.exe and scanpst.exe tools to verify file integrity”. Solution: First, make sure that the .PST file is not set as your default mail delivery location. If it's not and you can't close it by right-clicking its root folder and selecting Close or by going into File -> Data File Management and removing it that way, then go to Control Panel -> Mail -> Show Profiles and create a new profile from scratch containing just your good .PST. The uppermost Personal Folders can be accessed normally (Calendar, Contacts, Inbox etc.) The second Personal Folders set is not accessible and cannot be deleted. Clicking on it produces an error dialoge box: "The set of Folders could not be oppened" Invoking HELP displays: Quote This error usually appears if the OST or PST file you are using is: *Unavailable *Protected with file permissions *On a share on a server and the network is down *Corrupt To correct this problem, store the OST or PST file on the local computer. More information about this error message online. *The Microsoft site offers no solution to this error: ID: 10056 Unquote The Folder cannot be accessed, let alone using the scanpst tool. File Properties is greyed out. The strange thing is that under Data File Management, only the "working" Personal Folders set is visible. Have tried: 1. moving the pst files to a different location. 2.The Office Detect & Repair Tool under Help 3.Uninstalled Microsoft Office 2003 and reinstalled it again 4.Removing the "bad" Personal Folders in Safe Mode 5.Did a Google search for a solution. Now I need a helping hand please. It's rather late here now in Malta and I would not like to screw up in the Registry: I will try out your suggestion tomorrow morning. Will let you know the outcome. -------------------- "Diane Poremsky [MVP]" wrote: > It's a ghost pst - see http://www.outlook-tips.net/howto/ghosts.htm and > either make a new profile or
