If ten years ago it was still common to see an entire company using just one server, these days that's no longer the case. New computers are added to the network with the understanding that they will be taken care of by the admins. I have read many posts on the matter including http://forums.asp.net/t/1148170.aspx but I just can’t seem to get to the bottom of the issue. I have an asp.net 2.0 web site running on a Windows 2003 server with IIS6. When I look at the application log I see many .NET Runtime 2.0 Error entries, I get about 25 of these per day. My site on average gets around 1000 absolute visitors per day. The errors are usually coupled together in time periods. For example: 09:56:12 09:56:22 The errors are therefore spread over about 10 time points daily. The site is not crashing on every entry into the log. The site does go down at least once every 2 weeks, at random times, even in the middle of the night when there are very few users. The error entries in the application log at the crash point are no different to normal. There is no escalation of errors. It doesn’t report more than 3 errors. I have been through the Microsoft KB http://support.microsoft.com/kb/911816 but this was quite hard to follow. I found an excellent post which explained the issue in more detail and provided some example code http://www.eggheadcafe.com/articles/20060305.asp I included the module in my app and updated the web.config file. I ran a couple of test unhandled exceptions and these were correctly reported in the application log with the full stack trace. However, once this went live I still got the same .NET Runtime 2.0 Errors, with no further information, basically nothing changed. Finally I found the installer on http://unhandledexception.codeplex.com/ and set this up. Again the test exceptions were correctly reported in the application log, but also again nothing changed. I’m still getting the same errors with no descriptions or stack trace. I’m really lost at what to do next. Perhaps I have over looked something in setting this up, but the installer is pretty straight
