I have tried the following as I have the Windows XP CD (courtesy of my Dell desktop)1) Windows Install - previous successful installation, followed by Chkdsk2) Windows Install - Repair - R3) Created & tried using a bootable linux USB, but get a "Boot Error" message (I assume this is due to laptop BIOS not being able to perform this, as the Bootable USB works fine on the desktop)4) I tried the following command in Windows Recovery Console: EXPAND -R d:\I386\atapi.sy_ C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\atapi.sys but got Invalid Parameter message, have I typed something wrong, and is it even relevant? (saw it another part of this forum)Just can't seem to sort this out, and it's a bit frustrating as you can imagine. I'm assuming the only other options are to create a bootable CD, and attempt it with this. I did

The boot priority should list the CD drive before the Hard drive. Also disable any network boot option in bios. It's always funny until someone loses an Operating System! Can you press F12 for a boot menu during startup? If so, wait a few seconds until you hear the CD spin-up then press enter. It is relevant to me because I knew my system did not have the CD-ROM in the boot sequence (it's fairly old!). But when I looked in the BIOS settings, I couldn't see any reason why it should not work. My system had previously been WinNT, but it developed a problem with the Registry, seemed unfixable, and finally wouldn't boot. So I have purchased a WinXP Pro upgrade, which needs the CD-ROM as a bootable device. But after I put the CD-ROM as the first boot option, it goes to boot from there, but gives this message with "Boot failure" as the result. Does this indicate I have a problem with the CD-ROM, or I need to do something else to enable booting from the CD-ROM?
