Hi, I have just installed my first linux server as a mail server - UBUNTU 9 Server. The base installation seemd fine and then, using the admin guide "mail filtering section", I configured the mail filtering (CLAMAV and Spamassassin). Whilst the packages where installed OK - the configuration seems to have stopped with an error. The admin guide instructs me to edit a file so that the state is enabled. The actual excerpt from the guide is as follows: 5.2.2. Spamassassin Spamassassin automatically detects optional components and will use them if they are present. This means that there is no need to configure pyzor and razor. Edit /etc/default/spamassassin to activate the Spamassassin daemon. Change ENABLED=0 to: ENABLED=1So I entered: edit /etc/default/spamassassin The response is: Warning: unknown mime-type for "/etc/default/spamassassin" -- using aplication/octet-stream" Error: no write permission for file "/etc/default/spamassassin" I wondered if I needed to elevate to root so I tried: sudo edit /etc/default/spamassassin And the response was: [sudo] password for support: Warning: unknown mime-type for "/etc/default/spamassassin" -- using "application/octet-stream" Error: no "edit" mailcap rules fo

http://stackoverflow.com/questions/54139[...]cting-extension-from-filename-in-python/ > file_type = os.path.splitext(filename)[1] I generally try to avoid importing modules if there's a built-in method that works just as well. In this case, you're importing "os" anyway, but this also works in http://linuxgazette.net/186/misc/lg/possible_2_cent_tip__opening_files_from_the_command_line.html scripts where you don't. file_type = filename.split('.')[-1] > # Uses execlp so that the system PATH is used for finding the program file > # location > os.execlp(program,'',filename) The main problem with this type of script is http://osdir.com/ml/ubuntu-bugs/2012-09/msg39464.html that you have to be a Python programmer to add a filetype/program pair. I'd suggest breaking out the dictionary as an easily-parseable text file, or adding a simple interface ("Unsupported filetype. What program would you like to error no use?") that updates the list. > Is there any Linux command line tool which can easily do this? Midnight Commander is quite good at this; in fact, I've used that functionality of 'mc' in some of my shell scripts for just this purpose. They use a mix of regex matching, MIME-type matching, and literal extension recognition to work with various files. E.g., the ".gz" extension in "foo.1.gz" doesn't tell you anything about the type of error no edit file that it is (a man page). -- * Ben Okopnik * Editor-in-Chief, Linux Gazette * http://LinuxGazette.NET * TopBack Ben Okopnik [ben at linuxgazette.net] Wed, 20 Apr 2011 09:59:08 -0400 On Wed, Apr 20, 2011 at 10:10:40AM +0100, Francis Daly wrote: > On Wed, Apr 20, 2011 at 06:48:52PM +1000, Amit Saha wrote: > > Hi there, > > > Is there any Linux command line tool which can easily do this? > > "see", an alias of "run-mailcap". If I recall correctly, that's just the viewer. There's also "edit", from the same kit. (The syntax of .mailcap was created by half-insane crackmonkeys working their way up to Shakespeare, but a lot of the stuff is already defined for you.) -- * Ben Okopnik * Editor-in-Chief, Linux Gazette * http://LinuxGazette.NET * TopBack Ben Okopnik [ben at linuxgazette.net] Wed, 20 Apr 2011 12:26:03 -0400 On Wed, Apr 20, 2011 at 05:09:03PM +0100, Francis Daly wrote: > On Wed, Apr 20, 2011 at 09:59:08AM -0400, Ben Okopnik wrote: > > On Wed, Apr 20, 2011 at 10:10:40AM +0100, Francis Daly wrote: > > > On Wed, Apr 20, 2011 at 06:48:52PM +1000, Amit Saha wrote: > > > > > Is there any Linux command line tool which can easily do this? > > > > > > "see", an alias of "run-ma
