anyone know why I get the error message " Error! No text of specified style in document." in my captions. thanks, Nick Guest, Jan 6, 2005 #1 Advertisements Word Heretic Guest G'day "Nick" <>, Because your captions default to having a STYLEREF field at the start http://www.pcreview.co.uk/threads/caption-error.890123/ to pick up the Heading 1 numbering so your captions read 1-1,1-2,2-1,2-2 and so on. If you press Alt+F9 you will see these fields. If you don't plan on using heading styles, then you need to click the "Numbering" button in the Insert Caption dialog box and remove the checkmark next to the section on including heading numbering. I wi
that are driving me crazy, but I don’t see a single reference to them in any of the books.!! 1st case-I have a multi-page document with a chapter title, using Heading 1 style. On the 2nd page I start with Insert>Reference>Caption, choose Illustration as the label, and check the Chapter number check box. The result is Illustrattion 1-1, as expected. I then proceed to use other captions such as Figure and Table, and all captions appear as desired. But when I get to page 7, where I want to use the Illustration caption again, I get a result that varies from one trial to another (i.e., I might close the document and then re-open at another time or another day). One time the result is Illustration 0-1 (although the first Illustration caption is still in good shape as Illustration 1-1) and another time the caption of the second caption shows: Error! No text of specified style in document. 2 2nd case- Just to see what happens in an entirely blank document, I create the chapter title with Heading 1 style, use the Insert>Reference>Caption route to label an item and try different labels. The Page and Figure labels show the proper caption but the Illustration and Table labels result in the captions : Illustration Error! No text of specified style in document. 1 Table Error! No text of specified style in document. 1 What in the world is going on? Can you provide a solution? Making captions manually is one answer, but then I might as well use a typewriter (my joke) I look forward to your reply. Chris AnswerI don't have much experience with the Caption feature because I rarely create documents with numbered captions, but it certainly sounds like you're doing everything correctly. The only reasons I can think of for the situation you describe would be (a) some style other than Heading 1 is selected as the "Chapter number" in the Caption Numbering dialog, or (b) there is no Heading 1 paragraph preceding the location of the caption. Another thing to check on (though this would not give the error message you're seeing) is that you don't have any *empty* paragraphs in Heading 1 style. This can cause problems with heading numbering as well as caption numbering. Also, I assume you've tried updating (with F9) the captions that give an error message? And I assume that Heading 1 is actually numbered using auto numbering (you'll get an error message from the Caption Numbering dialog if it's not)? FWIW, captions use ordinary SEQ and StyleRef fields, so you might use Alt+F9 to see what the syntax of the fields is; that might give you a clue to what's going wrong. For the standard Figure 1-1 style (using Heading 1)
