Everything works perfectly out of the box, no configuration required whatever. I installed on an encrypted partition via the alternate x64 image from a usb stick. When I boot, the following text line displays on an otherwise empty screen: error: no video mode activated I assume this is from grub? The machine displays this for a few seconds then boots normally, so I must admit this is purely a cosmetic issue. However as I will be starting my machine in front of clients (no suspend or hibernate on an encrypted partition thankyou!) I'd rather get rid of it. I've found similar issues on other posts/forums but no solutions. Any ideas? **** WARNING **** User IQ less than recommended minimum. Replace user and try again. Adv Reply Janua

Since then i got the "no videomode set" error. The problem coubd be solved with "GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=noplymouth"(for text-mode) error no and "#GRUB_TERMINAL=console"("GRUB_TERMINAL=console" caused the problem on my machine) Hope this helps -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Foundations Bugs, which is subscribed to grub2 in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/699802 Title: error:: no video mode activated Status in "grub2" package in Ubuntu: Confirmed error no video Status in "grub2" source package in Precise: Confirmed Status in "grub2" source package in Quantal: Confirmed Bug description: Binary package hint: grub-pc On my laptop I am getting "error: no video mode activated." message from grub on system boot (in standard VGA mode). here, has to do with accessing the menu. When I hit shift immediately after the startup screen, GRUB loading (or something like that) briefly appears, then I get a blank screen, and then the normal boot process re-commences and I find myself with the normal LUKS password prompt (I'm using full-disk encryption). One (not entirely satisfactory) way to handle that is to "force" the GRUB menu to appear by commenting out the line GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=0 in /etc/default/grub. Second issue: I have my system set to boot in non-graphical mode, so I wanted also to set GRUB to non-graphical mode as well by uncommenting the line GRUB_TERMINAL=console. However, when I do that I get an error message: error: no video mode activated. Is there something with the MATE version of GRUB that only allows for a graphical GRUB menu? Dave_Barnes 2016-07-05 01:30:52 UTC #2 You got part of it.... In /etc/default/grub, set GRUB_GFXMODE=640x480 or whatever console text resolution you want. al_chemia 2016-07-05 01:52:41 UTC #3 No good, I still get the error. According to the comment in /etc/default/grub, that setting is for the graphical terminal. Dave_Barnes 2016-07-05 02:25:48 UTC #4 That is what I use here. The mode is set via the VESA Bios Extension calls and expect a VESA Bios. The only other piece that I use is to show the boot messages: GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=text The linux kernel expects an initial valid video mode from grub. unix.stackexchange.com How Do You Pass VGA/VESA Modes with GRUB2? boot, grub2, dual-boot, console asked by haziz on 01:58AM - 02 Jan 14 "In GRUB2 the preferred method of setting framebuffer resolution (to GRUB and the kernel) is to edit /etc/default/grub to contain these variables: GRUB_GFXMODE sets the resolution of GRUBGRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX controls whether the linux kernel will keep the resolution, and if you want the linux kernel to use different resolution than GRUB, you can set it with this variable in form widthxheight." Grub manual:http://www.gnu.org/software/grub/manual/grub.html#gfxmode To answer your question though, MATE works fine with a text based grub boot menu. al_chemia 2016-07-05 03:49:17 UTC #5 It works OK if I set GRUB_TIMEOUT=1. I only get the error message if I set it to 0. Dave_Barnes 2016-07-05 05:25:27 UTC #6 I'm not exactly sure what you are trying to ac
