In addition to navigating to the folder of the exe, you can also mitigate the problem by using the full path of the executable when running from a different folder. It's just when youtube-dl.exe is found through the path the error occurs on my system. mikhaelkh referenced this issue Sep 25, 2015 Closed ERROR: no write permissions when updating #6972 mikhaelkh commented Oct 7, 2015 I thought of a temporary solution for Windows: create a youtube-dl-U.cmd in the same directory as youtube-dl.exe in PATH with this text: @echo off pushd "%~dp0" cmd /c youtube-dl.exe -U

You should run your console (command line input) with privileges of system administrator, not «fixing» write permissions. В Sat, 20 Oct 2012 03:19:25 -0700 Agung Santoso Pranoto

To do this, you need root permissions to write in /usr/local/bin/. Try running it again with sudo. sudo youtube-dl -U share|improve this answer answered Jun 6 '15 at 20:39 camconn 1,284416 Thanks, it works. I'm still somewhat new to this. It tells me to restart youtube-dl. Is there a command I can type that does this? –Rin007 Jun 6 '15 at 20:41 1 @Rin007 Normally youtube-dl will close itself automatically. If it doesn't close itself, manually stop it with Ctrl+C on the command line... And remember to mark as solved if this helped out. –camconn Jun 6 '15 at 20:43 +1 well that was easy :) –Wilf Jun 6 '15 at 22:17 add a comment| up vote 0 down vote Those commands should update the script (as well as install it), so you don't need to run youtube-dl -U, you can run them again to update it to the latest version. Try 1 Installed and updated with following commands: sudo apt-get install youtube-dl sudo youtube-dl -U But when tried youtube-dl http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dwYatpwrs8s Then I got Hi! We changed distribution method and now youtube-dl needs to update itself one more time. This will only happen once. Simply press enter to go on. Sorry for the trouble! From now on, get the binaries from http://rg3.github.io/youtube-dl/download.html, not from the git repository. Then I went to http://rg3.github.io/youtube-dl/download.html and followed the installation instructions: Try 2 sudo wget http://youtube-dl.org/downloads/2013.05.23/youtube-dl -O /usr/local/bin/youtube-dl sudo chmod a+x /usr/local/bin/youtube-dl Got the same error about the distribution change and new link. Try 3 So I installed pip on my debian first and ran sudo pip install --upgrade youtube_dl But I am still getting same error and I have no idea what to do about it. linux debian youtube-dl share|improve this question edited Jun 8 '13 at 4:18 gunr2171 5,682103160 asked Jun 8 '13 at 3:54 user2465533 1912 youtube-dl does not need to be installed, just download it, assign exec permission and use it as usual, ./youtube-dl path-to-video –slackmart Jun 8 '13 at 4:08 @sgmart Are you sure about it.
