suite under /usr/local or any other path that you provide during installation. There is no such thing as a CCP4.app that can be started by clicking on it. Instead, you have to create in a Terminal.app a ".bashrc" file in your home directory ccp4 database access failure (/Users/name where name is your user name) and add a line to it that calls the ccp4i2 ccp4i setup script, like one of the following lines (check the correct path): source /usr/local/ccp4-6.0.2/bin/ccp4.setup-sh or . /usr/local/ccp4-6.0.2/bin/ccp4.setup-sh After that, this setup script is executed

whenever you open a new Terminal.app. You can verify the existence of any CCP4 program by typing, for instance, "which fft". The answer should give you the full path of the CCP4 fft program. If you want to use the ccp4i GUI, you should install the tcltkblt.pck for Mac OS X from the CCP4 download site under its default installation path. This is more the UNIX way of installation than the Mac way. I hope that helps, best regards, Dirk. Am 25.03.2008 um 15:47 schrieb Kurt Padilla: William, Thanks for your advice. I intend to give it a try in the next few days. Hopefully, I will have some positive results to share. Anastassis, I tried using the binary from the link you provided, but I was unable to get the program to run even though Installer said that the installation was successful. I don't remember the details, but the installation did not produce an executable .app file and typing ccp4i into Terminal didn't launch the program either. Then type: ccp4i which will bring up the Main Window of the Interface. Alternatively: ccp4i -h[elp] will list a short help text which indicates alternative ways of running the Interface - including: ccp4i https://www.mail-archive.com/ccp4bb@jiscmail.ac.uk/msg05346.html -t[ask] taskname which will run a cutdown version of the Interface to set up one CCP4 program or task (where the task might be one or more programs). ccp4i -v[iew] [filename] display a file using The FileViewer Utility. This utility uses the appropriate program to interpret the file contents (e.g. MTZDMP is run to list the header of MTZfiles). The file type is interpreted from the file extension. If the file has a non-standard extension, do not give its name on the command line http://www.uoxray.uoregon.edu/local/manuals/ccp4-5.0.2/ccp4i/help/general/intro.html - instead enter it in the file selection window which also has a menu for you to specify the file type. ccp4i -g[raph] [log_file] display the graphs from a log file or a simple data file with columns of data, using The Loggraph Utility. Documentation and Help There are various levels of documentation in and around the Interface: Full documentation - The full documentation can be read starting from Welcome to the CCP4 Task Interface. 'Help' button - There is a Help button at the top right of most Interface windows. Clicking in this brings up a Netscape window with a help page describing that window. 'Message line help' - As you move the mouse about a window, you will notice that when the cursor is over an entry widget (either a field you can type into, or a menu or button), some explanation of that widget is flashed in the message line, which is the gold-coloured bar at the top of the window. 'Bubble help' - this displays the same help text as the 'message line help' above, however the text is shown in a bubble which appears next to the widget in question after a short time-delay. This is in addition to the message line, but can be turned off if the user finds it too distracting. 'Right mouse button help' - For more information on a specific entry widget you can click on it with the right mouse button. This will bring up a Netscape

[edit] Directories & Project Directory CCP4i project window The first time you run the Interface, the window which enables you to set up directory aliases and define a project directory comes up automatically (right). Alternatively it can be accessed via the "Directories & ProjectDir" button near the top right of the main window. The CCP4 Interface is designed with the expectation that all data files relating to one crystallographic project will be in one directory. It is simple to override this but it may be helpful to organise all CCP4 work this way. You may have more than one project, and it is easy to
