How do i fix it? am I missing this exe ? path compilation share|improve this question asked Sep 20 '08 at 20:46 Praveen Chettypally add a comment| 3 Answers 3 active oldest votes up vote 13 down vote There is a bug in the Visual Studio 2008 Standard Edition installer. It does not install cl.exe if you only install Visual C++ but not Visual C#. To work around error executing cl exe this you have to install Visual C# even if you do not need this. share|improve this answer answered Feb 12 '10 at 15:40 Attila 14114 +1 This fixed it for me. –harms Jul 12 '10 at 17:31 +1 Nice one Attila. You saved me a shedload of pointless trawling. –AndyUK Aug 2 '11 at 13:15 add a comment| up vote 1 down vote cl.exe is VS2008 (and any other VS) C/C++ compiler, so check for more detailed error message why it cannot be spawned. Be sure you've installed C++ language support when installing VS2008. share|improve this answer answered Sep 20 '08 at 21:40 Michael Pliskin 1,31131838 add a comment| up vote 1 down vote It could be that your "path" environment variable does not contain the path to the folder where cl.exe is located. Another possible reason could be that when installing VS2008, you did not select the option to install the Win32 tools (which include the command line compiler). In any case, you may want to try to repair the installation of VS2008 (by running its setup via Control Panel - Add/Remove Programs), or use its "Add/Remove components" option and add the "Win32 tools" option (under Visual C++ - Visual C++ Tools). share|improve this answer answered Sep 20 '08 at 21:55 Andrei Belogortseff 1

If so put that path in the following location. In the msdev take tools->options->Directories->Executable error spawning cl dirctories. Here's what fixed it for me: In regedit.exe, navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\DevStudio\6.0\Build System Edit the Key "Use Environment Paths" and set it to zero. (Mine was set to 1). After I set it to zero, I opened VC6 and checked Tools\Options, Directories tab, and the paths were back. On a different development system, I found that the "Use Environment Paths" key did not exist. Wednesday

I googled the error message and got a lot of hits, but no solution I tried works. I've tried 1) making sure cl.exe is in the compilers bin directory, and making sure all required dlls are there. 2)using various ways to compile such as ctrl+f5, and I tried looking for a service pack on Microsoft's web, but with no success. Has anyone else seen this happen? If it matters I use Windows XP Pro, but that shouldn't be a problem should it? 07-19-2003 #2 ZakkWylde969 View Profile View Forum Posts ___ Join Date Jun 2003 Posts 806 I had problems with VC++ 6 to start with. This is what you do. First uninstall. Delete EVERYTHING. Even the empty folder. Restart. Reinstall. Make sure you have proper .dll's and compile away.
