13, 20093 0 0 0 Well, when you write your first win32 console application in Visual Studio 2008, you probably just want to click F5 and test if it runs or not. Unfortunately, probably you will get some trouble as I did. I collected three "confusing" errors here. Error spawning ‘rc.exe' Work-around: use Windows SDK Configuration Tool to change the headers/libs that Visual Studio 2008 refers to v6.0A. Error1fatal error LNK1181: cannot open input file ‘kernel32.lib' Work-around: use http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2705459/1project-error-prj0003-error-spawning-rc-exe Windows SDK Configuration Tool to change the headers/libs that Visual Studio 2008 refers to v6.0A. Error result 1 returned from ‘c:\program files\Microsoft SDKs\windows\v6.0A\bin\rc.exe' Work-around: turn off "Incremental Linking" I am not sure if there are other scenarios which caused these errors. Just for my experience, because my computer was installed with Windows SDK https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/pusu/2009/07/13/confusing-errors-in-building-win32-application-in-vs-2008/ partially.

Reply CharlesG says: September 6, 2012 at 3:01 pm Yes the last one doesn't work for me either. See http://www.codeproject.com/…/Visual-Cplusplus-build-debugging-error for some other suggestions on this one Reply CharlesG says: September 6, 2012 at 3:05 pm Also look in output window for more information It probably can't find your .rc file Reply Follow UsPopular TagsVisual Studio 2008 Windows Installer C# strategy pattern Visual Studio 2010 Refactoring switch statements Update multiple records Backward compatiblitity Full Screen set up Remote Debugging Windows Frame Margin Windows 7 64-bit machine MFC LaunchCondition Orca Registry Archives October 2009(1) July 2009(2) June 2009(4) August 2008(1) June 2008(2) May 2008(2) April 2008(2) February 2008(2) January 2008(1) All of 2009(7) All of 2008(10) Privacy & Cookies Terms of Use Trademarks © 2016 Microsofthints (like missing links in the Registry http://netcult.ch/elmue/error_spawning_rc.exe.htm and other bullshit)? You could not find rc.exe in the CAB files on the VS2008 Install DVD ? Thanks to ElmüSoft here is the solution: (I give you support for Microsoft products for free) It seems that a bug in the VS2008 installer does not install rc.exe if error spawning another version of Visual Studio (or the framework?) has already been installed before. Analyzing what msdev.exe does with SysInternals ProcessMonitor I found that Visual Studio searches the entire world to find rc.exe: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 9\VC\bin\rc.exe C:\Program Files\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v6.0A\Bin\rc.exe C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 9\Common7\Tools\bin\rc.exe C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio error spawning rc.exe 9\Common7\Tools\rc.exe C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 9\Common7\IDE\rc.exe C:\Program Files\HTML Help Workshop\rc.exe C:\Program Files\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v6.0A\Bin\rc.exe C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\rc.exe C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 9\rc.exe C:\Windows\SysWow64\rc.exe C:\Windows\System32\rc.exe C:\Windows\rc.exe C:\Windows\System32\wbem\rc.exe C:\Windows\System32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\rc.exe If it is not there in none of these folders then it spits out "Error spawning RC.exe". So my solution was simple: I copied rc.exe and rcdll.dll from my VS2005 installation into one of the above folders. After that the error disappeared and I saw another error: "Error spawning MT.exe" So I also copied mt.exe into the same folder and it compiled without error! It's so easy. If you don't have another Visual Studio installation where to take these files from, I offer my files here (they are from VS2005 but work also on VS2008): ErrorSpawningRcExe.zip If you don't trust me, upload the file to www.virustotal.com to see that there is no trojan in them.
