Started by Andrei , Jul 04 2009 08:33 PM Please log in to reply 4 replies to this topic #1 Andrei Andrei Members 7 posts OFFLINE Local time:09:33 PM Posted 04 July 2009 - 08:33 PM This problem is occurring on a Windows Vista Ultimate SP1 computer. I get a command prompt box and an error box that pops up every 10 seconds or so. The error says: "C:\Windows\system32\wuauclt.exe The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction." Once I close it, it pops up again shortly thereafter. I have tried to replace/reinstall wuaclt.exe but Vista will not allow it. I can prevent the error from occurring if I turn off Windows Automatic Update, but I would like to get to the root of the problem. Thank you for your help! See if that helps if not then:Do you get a particular error number?Have you tried to install SP2 and failed? In ALL the threads I read concerning this issue wh
That occurs when i call the int 13h with these parameters: ah=02h al=1 ;how many sectors? ch=0 ;cylinder cl=0 ;sector to read dh=0 ;head dl=80h ;first hard drive es:bx => buffer 512 bytes long if I read a floppy drive (dl=0), than everything goes right, but I cannot read a hd. What is wrong? I'm using windows vista rc1 (but I don't think it's a beta system bug) thx everybody Top ntvdm encountered a hard error by Frank Kotl » Mon, 30 Oct 2006 04:08:57 Shouldn't cause a "hard error", but sector numbering usually starts at 1 (weird, I know). I'm surprised it worked on a floppy. Best, Frank Top ntvdm encountered a hard error by Rod Pember » Mon, 30 Oct 2006 17:06:00 This is your problem: you're running int 0x13 code in a protected mode Windows NT "DOS-box" without file/drive locking code. As I said to Jay in one of the posts in "LSA Disk Sector Read - using int 13h ah 42 (extended read)" regarding his int 0x13 code: "... If you're running the code from Windows 3.1/98/98SE/98ME/NT/2k/XP, Linux, Bochs, VMWare, QEMU, DOSBox, DOSEMU, etc., don't expect the code to work. ... If you're running from Windows, you'll need to add additional file/drive locking code to work under Windows." Since you're attempting to run the code under Windows, you'll need "additional file/drive locking code." Where do you get that? As I said to Jay in another post in "LSA Disk Sector Read - using int 13h ah 42 (extended read)": "You could look at LFN tools by Ortwin 'Odi' Glueck. In addition to working for Real Mode DOS, they implement Windows drive locking, and should work for Protected Mode 'DOS-boxes' and DOS emulators under older Windows OS: Win95/98/98SE/ME etc. I don't know whether the drive locking will work under Protected Mode 'DOS-boxes' and DOS emulators for 2k/NT/XP. The source code is for Microsoft Visual C++ 1.51." http://www.yqcomputer.com/ http://www.yqcomputer.com/ That's about the only example of drive locking that I know of which works under some versions of Windows. You're on your own for Windows NT. Rod Pemberton Top ntvdm encountered a hard error by Galb » Tue, 31 Oct 2006 07:06:54 well, I've actually written cl=1. anyway, is there any other way to read a drive sector under winXp without using a locking drive? e.g. another interrupt? Top ntvdm encountered a hard error by Frank Kotl » Tue, 31 Oct 2006 12:37:02 You might try int 13h/45h. In general, if you want to use bios interrupts, boot to dos. Windows gives you a "fake dos"... and not a very good fake. (protected mode is protecting your
