Running with sudo from the start works great. –Willi Ballenthin Jul 29 '15 at 17:05 1 The USB must be formatted to FAT32. Otherwise, I still get this error. To do that, open GParted, select the correct device from the drop-down, right-click the partition and unmount it. Then, right-click and format to FAT32. –Prinsig Jul 13 at 9:24 add a comment| up vote 7 down vote For some reason winusb kept hanging up on formatting the USB drive, said it couldn't access the drive. I ended up formatting to NTFS using the "Disks" application in Ubuntu and then using winusb from the termi

What does that mean? up vote 8 down vote favorite 3 I've written a shell script to soft-restart HAProxy (reverse proxy). Executing the script from the shell works. But I want a daemon to execute the script. That doens't work. system() returns 256. I have no clue what that might mean. #!/bin/sh # save previous state mv /home/haproxy/haproxy.cfg /home/haproxy/haproxy.cfg.old mv /var/run/haproxy.pid /var/run/haproxy.pid.old http://stackoverflow.com/questions/3736320/executing-shell-script-with-system-returns-256-what-does-that-mean cp /tmp/haproxy.cfg.new /home/haproxy/haproxy.cfg kill -TTOU $(cat /var/run/haproxy.pid.old) if haproxy -p /var/run/haproxy.pid -f /home/haproxy/haproxy.cfg; then kill -USR1 $(cat /var/run/haproxy.pid.old) rm -f /var/run/haproxy.pid.old exit 1 else kill -TTIN $(cat /var/run/haproxy.pid.old) rm -f /var/run/haproxy.pid mv /var/run/haproxy.pid.old /var/run/haproxy.pid mv /home/haproxy/haproxy.cfg /home/haproxy/haproxy.cfg.err mv /home/haproxy/haproxy.cfg.old /home/haproxy/haproxy.cfg exit 0 fi HAProxy is executed with user haproxy. My daemon has it's own user too. Both run with sudo. So it's actually exiting with 1. It seems this happens in C too. share|improve this answer edited Sep 17 '10 at 14:50 answered Sep 17 '10 at 14:44 Skilldrick 42.9k23129205 1 Thanks! So it's EPERM /* Operation not permitted */ ... but why ... I start the daemon with sudo. –Jan Deinhard Sep 17 '10 at 14:57 1 Perl does not return multiplied exit values. It returns a 16 bit value, with the exit code in the higher 8 bits. It's often the same, but

Ras has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question: Does any body knows what happens when you do a system call and it returns 256? Do you know what 256 means? Thanks in advance Edited 2001-05-18 by Ovid Comment on System Return Code (was: 256) Replies are listed 'Best First'. Re: System Return Code (was: 256) by kschwab (Priest) on May 19, 2001 at 17:26UTC The perl docs actually do have a good explanation of what the return value from system() is, but it's in "perldoc perlvar" instead of "perldoc -f system". system() returns the value of $? after the wait() is done. Here it is: $? The status returned by the last pipe close, backtick (``) command, or system() operator. Note that this is the status word returned by the wait() system call (or else is made up to look like it). Thus, the exit value of the subprocess is actually ($? >> 8), and $? & 127 gives which signal, if any, the process died from, and $? & 128 reports whether there was a core dump. (Mnemonic: similar to sh and ksh.) Just to clarify, $? >> 8 is bitshifting by 8, which is essentially dividing by 256. So, if you are getting a return val of 256 from system(), your spawned program did an exit(1).[reply][d/l] Re: 256 by no_slogan (Deacon) on May 19, 2001 at 01:40UTC You mean... $result = system("foo") sets $result to 256? It means "foo" returned 1. Read "man foo" to see what that means - probably something went wrong. Or not. I need more information to be helpful.[reply][d/l] Re: 256 by Beatnik (Parson) on May 19, 2001 at 01:38UTC AFAIK it's application dependent. system() returns the application status/exit code, so whatever the application passes along as exit code is catcheable in your perl code.256 could be anything really :) Greetz Beatnik ...
